Sets: Enhancement Activity

(Objectives/Learning Competencies)
1. define and describe the universal set, the union of sets, the intersection of sets, the
difference of sets, and the complement of sets;
2. solve problems involving set-operations using Venn diagram.

❖ The four-basic operation on sets

1. Union of sets: 𝑨 ∪ 𝑩 (A union B, or the union of A and B)

→ set of all elements found in both sets
Example: If 𝐴 = {𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐, 𝑒} and 𝐵 = {𝑏, 𝑐, 𝑒, 𝑓, 𝑔}
then, 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵 = {𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐, 𝑒, 𝑓, 𝑔}
2. Intersection of sets: 𝑨 ∩ 𝑩 (A intersects B, or the intersection of A and B)
→ set of all elements that is common to both sets
Example: If 𝐴 = {1, 2, 3, 4} and 𝐵 = {0, 2, 3, 4, 9}
then, 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵 = {2, 3, 4}
3. Complement of a set: 𝑨′ (complement of A, or A prime)
→ set of all elements in the universal set but not found in a given set
Example: If 𝑈 = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9} and 𝐴 = {5, 7}
then, 𝐴′ = {1, 3, 9}
4. Difference of sets: 𝑨 − 𝑩 (A minus B, or the difference of A and B)
→ Set of all elements found in the first given set but not in the second given set
Example: If 𝐴 = {4, 5, 6, 7} and 𝐵 = {1, 6, 7, 8, 9}
then, 𝐴 − 𝐵 = {4, 5}
𝐵 − 𝐴 = {1, 8, 9}
❖ Universal Set is the set comprised of all elements being considered in a particular discussion.

❖ A Venn diagram is an illustration that uses circles to show the relationships among things or
finite groups of things. Circles that overlap have a commonality while circles that do not
overlap do not share those traits. Venn diagrams help to visually represent the similarities
and differences between two or more concepts.

❖ Circles and other closed curves are used in Venn diagram to illustrate relationships between
sets, the circles are usually pictured within a rectangle.
→ A rectangle represents the universal set, and the circles are the subsets which may be
shaded under consideration.

WHAT’S MORE

Let 𝑀 = {𝑥/𝑥 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑡ℎ𝑠 𝑜𝑓𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟}

𝑆 = {𝐽𝑢𝑛𝑒, 𝐽𝑢𝑙𝑦, 𝐴𝑢𝑔𝑢𝑠𝑡}

𝐽 = {𝐽𝑎𝑛𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑦, 𝐽𝑢𝑛𝑒, 𝐽𝑢𝑙𝑦}

𝑊 = {𝐷𝑒𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟, 𝐽𝑎𝑛𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑦, 𝐹𝑒𝑏𝑟𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑦}

List all the elements of each of the following.

1. 𝐽 ∪ 𝑆 = _______________________________________________________________________

2. 𝑆 ∩ 𝑊 = ______________________________________________________________________

3. 𝐽 ∩ 𝑊′ = ______________________________________________________________________

4. 𝐽 ∩ (𝑆 ∪ 𝑊) = __________________________________________________________________

5. 𝑀 − (𝑆 ∪ 𝑊) = _________________________________________________________________

WHAT I CAN DO

Given: U = {x/x is a prime number greater than 3 but less than 30}

A = {x/x is an odd number between 1 to 30}

B = {x/x is an even number greater than 10 but less than 30}

C = {x/x is a composite number greater than or equal to 4 but less than 30}

2. 𝐵′ = __________________________________________________________________________

3. (𝐵 ∪ 𝐶)′ = _____________________________________________________________________

4. 𝐵′ ∪ 𝐶 = _______________________________________________________________________

5. 𝐴′ − 𝐵 = ______________________________________________________________________

4. (𝐵′ − 𝐴)  𝐶 5. (𝐴 ∩ 𝐶′)  𝐵
