specialty items (strainers, bleed rings, etc.) in sweet hydrocarbon service. This Specification
applies to shop fabricated pipe spools, skid piping and field installed piping systems. Refer to
Specification SGE-PEG-2201, "Piping Materials Supplement", for specific requirements which
take precedence over this specification.

These codes shall be interpreted as the minimum requirements applicable to the subject
work, and no statement contained in this specification shall be construed as limiting the
work to such minimum requirements. Codes referenced within these listed codes shall
also apply. The latest editions of the codes listed shall govern all work.
• API 6A, "Valves and Wellhead Equipment"
• API 6D, "Pipeline Valves (Steel Gate, Plug, Ball and Check Valves)"
• API 6FA, "Fire Test for Valves", with 1992 supplement, (Trunnion Ball Valves)

Pressed and Forged Steel Shapes, Plates, Bars and Strips"

3.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

3.1 General
CONTRACTOR shall provide all piping materials with the exception of those furnished
by COMPANY, and specifically noted as COMPANY furnished. Unless noted otherwise,
all materials furnished by the CONTRACTOR shall be new, unused and undamaged.
Unless otherwise noted, all piping components shall be supplied in accordance with the
applicable codes referenced herein and this specification.
Substitution of materials by CONTRACTOR may not be made without prior written
approval of COMPANY.
Piping wall thicknesses do not include any additional thickness which may be required
due to thermal loads, live loads, hydraulic shock, or loads and forces from other causes,
all of which must be considered in the design of piping systems.

3.2 Material Identification

All piping materials (pipe and fittings), except those with threaded connections, shall be
supplied with certified material test reports and certificates to identify the type of steel,
composition, heat number, and special tests.
The CONTRACTOR shall furnish COMPANY Inspector with one copy of all mill
certificates for all CONTRACTOR purchased materials.

3.3 Pipe
Piping systems are identified by line numbers in accordance with the line numbering
system in Table A - Line Numbering System.
Pipe sizes are ½" and larger. Smaller sizes are classed as tubing.
The use of ½" pipe shall be limited to the installation of instrument and piping vents and
drains. Other uses shall be subject to COMPANY approval.
All straight nipples shall be made from the same pipe material as specified in the
applicable piping system specification.
Pipe sizes 1½", 2½", 3½", 5", 7" and 9" shall not be used without prior COMPANY
approval. Standard equipment supplied with connections of these sizes shall be
adjusted to a specified size immediately adjacent to the equipment.
Air intake and exhaust piping for internal combustion engines and fired equipment stacks
are exempt from this specification.

3.4 Tubing
Tubing sizes are 1/4" & 3/8". Larger sizes are classed as piping.
All tubing, unless otherwise noted, shall be provided in accordance with the applicable
instrument specification.

3.5 Fittings
Hex bushings - but not flush bushings - may only be used with tubing fittings for
connection to instruments, or as otherwise specifically approved by COMPANY. No
street elbow or threaded bushings shall be used in piping.
The thickness of reducing fittings shall match the wall thickness of the pipe wall at the
larger end. The fitting shall be tapered on a 1:4 slope to ensure pipe fitting wall thickness
matches the pipe wall at the smaller end.
Only seamless fittings shall be used.
Wrought fittings made from block forgings and machined to the required dimensions
shall not be used without prior COMPANY approval.

3.6 Flanges
The bore of weld neck flanges shall be the same as the ID of the pipe to which it is to be
welded.
Where metallic flanges are bolted to non-metallic flanges, both flange faces shall be flat
faced and provided with full-face gaskets. Raised faces may be used on certain heavy
duty fiberglass flanges where raised faces are provided on the fiberglass flange.

3.7 Branch Connections

Branch connections shall be made in accordance with Tables H through M, as

applicable.

3.8 Bolting
Stud bolts shall be used for all piping closures.
Bolting threads shall be in accordance with ASTM A193 and ANSI B1.1. Stud bolts shall
have a full continuous thread with sufficient length to extend a minimum of one thread
and a maximum of three threads outside each nut.
All flange studs and nuts shall be cadmium plated.

3.9 Gaskets
Spiral wound gaskets to ASME B16.20 shall be used in conjunction with raised face
flanges with a smooth finish (125-250 microinch AARH).
Compressed non-asbestos fiber gaskets to ANSI B16.21 shall be used in conjunction
with raised face flanges with a serrated spiral finish (250-500 microinch AARH).
Full face gaskets for flat face flanges shall be made from thick compressed non-asbestos
sheets, or neoprene for non-metallic flanges.
Oval rings in accordance to ANSI B16.20 shall be used for ring type joint flanges. Rings
for API 6A valve flanges shall conform to API 6A.
Rings for API 6BX flanges shall conform to API 6A.

3.10 Threads
All pipe threads, coupling and plug threads shall be NPT (National Pipe Thread) in
accordance with ANSI B1.20.1.
Tubing fittings with male or female connections shall be threaded NPT. Threads integral
to the fitting shall be ISO 288/1 parallel.
Seal welded threaded piping shall not be used except where prior approval is given by
COMPANY.
