Work and Impulse
Assume g=10 m/s2 where required
2021-22

I. Work done by a constant force

1. A block of mass m= 3 kg is pulled by a force F=80 N upwards through a

height h = 3m. Find the work done on the block by the applied force F
and its weight.

2. A ball has a constant force F  (iˆ  4 ˆj  2kˆ) N acting on it. Find the work done by this force on the
ball when it is displaced from point P (3 m, 2 m, 1 m) to a point Q (4 m, 1 m, 3 m).

3. A constant force F  (3iˆ  5 ˆj  2kˆ) N acts on a body. Find the work done by this force if the
body moves from A (3 m, -2 m, 4 m) to B where the position vector of point B is given by
rB  (2iˆ  6 ˆj  4kˆ)m .

4. Two unequal masses of m=3kg and M=4kg are connected by a massless

string passing over a smooth pulley as shown. If the system is released
from rest, find the work done by the string on both the blocks in 3 s.

II. Work done by a Variable force

5. A force F  (3  2 x) N acts on a particle in the positive x- direction. Find the work done by
this force when the particle moves from x = 2 m to x = +3m.

6. A force F acting on a particle

varies with the position x as
shown. Find the work done
by this force in displacing the
particle from
(i) x = -5m to the origin
(ii) origin to x =10 m

7. A force F  i N acts on a particle. Find the work done by this force in displacing the
x3
particle from (4 ,0) m to (8 ,0) m .

8. 𝑟2 = (3𝑖̂ + 9𝑗̂)𝑚 along the curve y = x2. A force

𝑟1 = (2𝑖̂ + 4𝑗̂)𝑚 to ⃗⃗⃗
A particle moves from ⃗⃗⃗
F  (3x2iˆ  2 yjˆ) N acts on it. Find the work done by this force.

III. Spring Force

9. A block of mass 2 kg is suspended from a vertical spring of natural length 1.5 m. When the
block hangs in equilibrium, the spring’s length is 1.7 m. Find the energy stored in the spring.

10. A spring of natural length 40 cm has a force constant 6 N/cm. Find the work done in
extending the spring from a length of 50 cm to 60 cm.

11. A variable force F is used to pull an ideal spring, slowly extending it. Initially the force F was
20 N and finally after pulling it by 6 cm, the force F was 50 N. Find the work done by this
variable force.

12. Find the work done in compressing a spring from an extension of 6 cm to a compression of 4
cm, if the force constant of the spring is 40 N/m.

IV. Impulse

13. A loaded truck of mass 5000 kg moving at 2 m/s is brought to rest in 0.2s when it strikes a wall. Find
the average force exerted by the wall.

14. [NEET] A ball of mass 150 g is hit by a force for 0.1 s which gives it an acceleration of 20 m/s2 during
the time the force acts. Find the impulse imparted by the force to the ball.
(a) 0.5 N-s (b) 0.1 N-s (c) 0.3 N-s (d) 1.2 N-s

15. A force acting on a particle from t = -5 s to

t = 10 s is shown in the graph. Find the
impulse imparted by the force to the
particle:

speed of the ball immediately after it gets the impulse.

17. [NEET] A bullet is fired from a gun. The force on the bullet is given by F  600  2 105 t where, F is
in newton and t in second. The force on the bullet becomes zero as soon as it leaves the barrel. What
is the impulse imparted to the bullet?
