2. Insights

Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I know that changing the name or
the term to “global citizenship” has its purpose. It aims to abandon the North-South
dichotomy and acknowledges the on-going changes brought upon by individuals. According
to the article, the term “global citizenship” emphasizes the change of aim from “making a
change here” to “making a change here and there” since the problems we are facing today are
in a global scale. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson I believe this is a
good step to acknowledge individuals who participate in making a change within their
community or state. Somehow, it encourages people to work on their craft and plan for a
business or anything that may help boost the economic standing of a state. The new path that
this “global citizenship” is taking can change the way people think. That it is not just the job
or responsibility of the government to improve and stabilize the economy of the country.
“Global Citizenship” also acknowledges and encourages as well the participation of
individuals as they have been proved to be effective. I just think that people need to be more
aware of these responsibilities and they need to realize how important it is to cooperate since
it will benefit all.

Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I am aware of the different types of
citizenship existing in the world today. I believe that although different, they each have
reasonable purposes as to why there is an existing type of citizenship. One way or another, it
benefits the people. However reading the article/understanding the lesson, I am more
enlightened with their differences. The liberal citizenship theory gives more emphasis to the
growth of individuals. It supports the idea of empowering individuals and they are not
obligated to the country. It’s just that they have to follow the laws and pay the right taxes.
Meanwhile, the communautarist citizenship theory is about the greater good. They are
obligating people to contribute in any way to their community. On the other hand, there is the
republican citizenship theory wherein the focus is more on political community. People are
encouraged to take part in public debates and contribute to the state affairs. There is also the
neo-republican citizenship theory that is more applicable today. It is encouraging people or
society to reach out and accept the rich diversity of communities that we know today.

Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I know that there are existing laws
that we must abide regarding the human rights and other rules of nations. I also know that
there is an existing morality that is universally known and is being implemented without any
authority foreseeing it. However after reading the article/understanding the lesson, I am now
aware of the so-called formal dimension and moral dimension. The formal dimension
pertains to a legislation that promotes and creates laws that must be followed by every state.
Though I agree with what the article stated that it’s hard to implement this but I think it will
benefit more. I just think that it needs to be carefully planned and it has to be with pure
intentions since the idea of a legislation that has a power over every country can go very
badly when handled poorly.

3. Questions

I. Is the term “global citizenship” changing the way individuals think regarding the state of the world? Or
is it just another new-found term?

II. No type of citizenship is better than the other because it depends on how it is applied. However, if we
could choose one, what is the better choice for our country today?

III. How do you think we can create a legislation that creates laws for every country? Are we ready for
that?
