BRIEF INTRODUCTION:
Although the System International (SI) has already superseded the English Measure,
Board foot as the unit measure in computing wood volume is still in use particularly
for the small sizes for commercial purposes. However, cubic meter is also adopted in
measuring wood of large quantity or volume.
4
TOPIC:
Compute / Calculate Board Feet and Linear feet
OBJECTIVES:
Identify and analyze carefully the computation of board feet and linear feet
Calculate/Compute for the board feet and linear feet
Find out the difference of board feet and linear feet
Estimate bill of materials
LEARNING CONTENT
The board foot or board-foot is a unit of measurement for the volume of lumber in the
United States and Canada and in the Philippines. It is the volume of a one-foot length of
a board one-foot-wide and one inch thick. Board foot can be abbreviated FBM (for "foot,
board measure"), BDFT, or BF.
A board foot is a piece of lumber one inch thick, twelve inches wide, and twelve inches
long.
Formula: BF = T” x W” x L’ / (12) or BF = T” x W” x L” / (144)
Where: T and W is in inches
L is in feet
For instance, a 2 x 6 also equals one board foot for each foot of length. Board
footage is calculated by multiplying the nominal thickness in inches (T) by the nominal
width in inches (W) by the actual length in feet (L) and dividing by 12. The formula is: T
x W x L = Board ft. 3.
5
CALCULATING BOARD FEET
Definition One board foot (bf) is a board that is 1-foot square and 1 inch
Thick. The dimension is 1” x 12” x 1”
6
And 1 inch thick is determine as follows;
12” x 6” x 1” 72
----------------------------- = -------- = 6 bf
12 12
14’ x 4” x 2” 112
-------------------------- = ------ = 9.33 bf
12 12
2” x 6” x 14’
= 5 pcs x ------------------------------
12
= 70 board feet
Note To determine the bf in a stack of boards when all the boards are of
equal size determines the bf in one board and multiply that by the
number of boards
ON MEASURING WOOD:
1. The thickness and width of lumber is in inches and the length is in feet of even
numbers. In short, odd is unknown in the language of length of lumber. For
example, a structural member that you need for a span of 4.00 meters is 13 feet,
and if odd length is not included, in the dictionary of lumber it will be 14 feet.
2. Lumber of nominal sizes from 2” x 2” and lower are no longer computed in board
foot, Instead, by linear foot, meaning the wood stick length will just be multiplied
by the unit price not the board feet.
3. The price of lumber is variable depending upon:
a) Length - the longer the wood the higher the unit price.
b) Width - the wider the width the higher is the unit price.
c) Kind of wood.
4. In the province of lumbering purchasing of lumber in flitches’ sizes, the
Thickness and the width are measured at their narrowest portion and the
Length is in feet of even length.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING 1
COMPUTATION OF BOARD FEET
INFORMATION SHEET NO 2
To measure linear feet, measure the length in inches, then divide by 12 to determine
linear feet. No complicated calculations required, as when you are measuring square
footage.
8
Is linear feet the same as feet?
Linear feet (often called Lineal feet) are the same as regular feet. No conversion
is necessary. If something is 6 linear feet tall, it is 6 feet tall. It should be noted, that the
correct term is Linear, since Lineal refers to a line of ancestry, not to length
You divide 80 by 8 for the result of 10, which is the measurement of the room's
width in linear feet. To calculate the perimeter, you add two length measurements and
two widths. For an 8 by 10 foot room, the perimeter is (8 x 2) + (10 x 2) or 36 linear feet.
9
SOLUTION:
L = 2(14) + 2(18) – 2(3)
= 28 + 36 - 6 = 58 linear feet
Example Room of 12ft by 16 ft with two doors allowing for 2 feet per door
MATERIAL ESTIMATE
10
ESTIMATING is the process of finding an estimate, or approximation, because plans for
the distribution of labor and for purchases of raw materials must be made, despite the
inability to know every possible problem.
BILL OF MATERIALS
A bill of materials is a list of all things needed in a project together with their description,
sizes and amount or price. All information needed should be in the bill of materials
Parts of a Bill of Materials
1. Quantity tells the amount of materials to be purchased
2. Unit gives the measure of materials to be purchased
3. Description states the detailed name of materials
4. Unit cost gives the price of each materials
5. Amount is the cost of all materials
Example:
Suggested Project: Batter Board Layout
Quantity Unit Materials and description Unit Total
price
12 pieces 2 x 2 x 12 rough lumber 60/bd ft 2,880
6 kilos Common wire nail # 4 80/kilo 480
4 kilos Common wire nail # 2 80/kilo 320
1 Roll Transparent hose 200 200
1 Roll Nylon string # 10 100 100
4 pieces 2 x 3 x 12 rough lumber 60bdft 1,440
Total 5,420
