For the learner/s:
Welcome to the Research in Daily Life 2
Module on Research in Daily Life 2
Our mind is the most powerful part of our human body, with our mind working at its best, we
can achieve anything. Despite different circumstances we might face, we should stand firm and
continue with life. Our mind is associated with our ability to learn, appreciate and create
essential things. Hence, this signifies that you as a learner is capable and empowered to succeed.
Your academic success lies in your own hands!
This module aims to provide the essential concepts, skills and competencies needed which are
useful in real life situations. The lessons and activities in this module is designed with
accordance to the skills and tasks suited for 21st Century learners.

LESSON

CLASSROOM ACTION RESEARCH

Action research is inquiry or research in the context of focused efforts to improve the
quality of an organization and its performance. It typically is designed and conducted by
practioners who analyzed the data to improve their own practice.
Action research has the potential to generate genuine and sustained improvements in
school. It gives educators new opportunities to reflect on and assess their teaching; to explore
and test new ideas, methods, and materials; to assess how effective the new approaches were; to
share feedback with fellow team member; and to make decision about which new approaches to
include in the team‟s curriculum, instruction and assessment plans.

ACTION RESEARCH VS FORMAL RESEARCH

TOPIC FORMAL RESEARCH ACTION RESEARCH

Training needed by Extensive On own or with

researcher consultation
Goals of research Knowledge that is Knowledge to apply to generalizable
the local situation
Review of previous research Problems or goals currently
Method of identifying the faced
problem to be studied

Procedure for literature Extensive, using primary More cursory, using

review sources secondary sources

Sampling approach
Random or representative Students or clients with
sampling whom they work

Research design Rigorous control, long time

frame Looser procedures,
change during study;
quick time frame;
control through
triangulation.

Measurement Evaluate and pretest Convenient measures or

procedures measures standardized test

Data analysis Statistical test;
qualitative techniques Focus on practical, not
statistical significance;

Action research is a form of collective self-reflective inquiry undertaken by several participants

in social situation in order to improve the rationality and justice of their own social and
educational practices, as well as their understanding of those practices and the situation in
which these practices are carried out.

ACTION RESEARCH IN SCHOOLS

Action research can be done by individuals or by team of colleagues. The team approach
is called collaborative inquiry.
Action research has the potential to generate genuine and sustained improvements in
schools. It gives education new opportunities to reflect on and assess their teaching; to explore
and test new ideas, methods and materials; to assess how effective the new approaches were; to
share feedback with fellow team members; and to make decisions about which new approaches
to include in the team‟s curriculum, instruction, and assessment plans.
CHARACTERISTICS OF SCHOOL ACTION RESEARCH

1. Action research in schools investigates human actions and social situation which are
experienced by teachers as:

• unacceptable in some respects (problematic);

• susceptible to change (contingent);
• requiring a practical response (prescriptive).
Action research is concerned with the everyday practical problems experienced by teachers,
rather than the “theoretical problems” defined by pure researchers within a discipline of
knowledge. It may be carried out by the teacher themselves or by someone they commission to
carry it out for them.

2. The aim of action-research is to deepen the teacher‟s understanding (diagnosis) of his

problem. It therefore adopts an exploratory stance towards any initial definitions of his
situation he may hold.
This understanding does not indicate any specific response but it does indicate more generally
what sort of response is appropriate. Understanding does not determine appropriate action must
be grounded in understanding.

3. Action research adopts a theoretical stance in which action intended to change the
situation is temporarily suspended until a deeper understanding of the practical problem
has been achieved.

ACTIVITY
DIRECTION: Think of any problem that you observe in your school and answer the following
question that follows.

1. What is the most common problem you have observed which is present in school/ classroom?

2. What can you do in order to address the said problem?

3. Create a plan which you will follow in order to solve the problem
GENERALIZATION

Action research provides teachers focus on one aspect of their practice they would like to
improve. Specific questions and a finite time period bind each iteration. This sure ensures natural
pauses for reflection and planning
