countries. Initially, it takes us back to our native cultural and traditional way of life. It is where
we acquired and developed the values we have now. It is where we grew.

We usually focus on preserving social harmony, motivated primarily by being accepted within a
group: family, relatives, friends, and community. That is why we highlight spirituality and
family-centeredness because these two often affect every person from all walks of life. One may
be ridiculed or praised depending on one's actions. Social approval, acceptance by a group, and
belonging to a group are notable concerns. Caring about what others will think, say, or do
strongly influences Filipinos' social behavior.

There may be values that fade through time as we arrive in this modern era. But several stays the
same. Some are forgotten or not practiced anymore. Now, these open the door to new values. We
are Filipinos. We evolve and adapt to the modern world.

b. Discuss nationalism and patriotism in the Filipino context. (10 points)

Nationalism is an ideology based on the belief that an individual's patriotism and devotion to the
nation-state takes precedence over other personal or group interests. Nationalism is a relatively
new phenomenon. People have been attached to their native soil, their parents' traditions, and
established territorial authorities throughout history. Still, it wasn't until the end of the 18th
century that nationalism became a widely recognized sentiment molding public and private life
and one of, if not the greatest, single determining factors of modern history. Nationalism is
frequently wrongly considered a permanent component in political behavior because of its
dynamic energy and all-pervading quality.

Patriotism is founded on the sound principles that the country upholds, such as freedom, justice,
and equality. The patriot believes that their country's government and people are essentially good
and should work together to improve their quality of life.
