SICENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY

Name: JOHN JAMES S. TABOSARES Course & Yr.: BSA-2

Instructor: Anamary L. De La Pina Date: September 1, 2021

Activity 1: Journal No. 1

Direction: Answer the following questions in 1 paragraph (100-150 words)

______
1. How did society shape science and how did science shape society? 50
As we advance in science, society discovers more problems for science to find solutions to.
They shape each other as they continue through the cycle of creating problems and finding
solutions. Society helps determine how its resources are deployed to fund scientific work,
encouraging some sorts of research and discouraging others .Science is the best aggregate
undertaking. It adds to guaranteeing a more extended and better life, screens our wellbeing,
gives medication to fix our infections, and eases a throbbing painfulness. Society thus
shapes science, but science also shapes society. Science also shapes society, and reminders
of this help underscore that research can affect how people navigate their lives. This includes
influencing how individuals view, and elect to treat, mental health issues. The intended
consequences of science are often good, but unintended consequences also exist.

2. How do social and human issues influence science?

Aw we desire to go beyond our limitations, we knowingly and unknowingly influence science.

Social and human issues influence science in the sense that they may prompt scientific studies
aimed at solving them. Science can also become a social issue in itself especially when
different factions of society come into conflict over how and whether to use science to solve
societal problems. Human circumstances supply the drive for scientific research. Desires,
anxieties, shortages and the like sparks off investigation and thorough inquiry in attempts to
unravel human issues. In any case, our social interaction and the issues we confront can also
color interpretation of the results of scientific inquiry. Society helps determine how its
resources are deployed to fund scientific work, encouraging some sorts of research and
discouraging others. Similarly, scientists are directly influenced by the interests and needs
of society and often direct their research towards topics that will serve society. And at the most
basic level, society shapes scientists’ expectations, values, beliefs, and goals .

3. How did the political and cultural landscapes of the society affect the development of scientific
culture, science activities and science literacy?

The political and cultural landscapes greatly affect the development of scientific culture,
activities, and literacy. the fact that the core of science is a process to make a hypothesis, test
the hypothesis, gather evidence, compare results and then do it all again. The scientific
method is all about learning about the world around us and how things happen. To pay
attention to the prevalence of tradition in culture and politics. Specifically, whether tied to a
religion or not, most cultures despise questioning in favor of obedience. Scientific culture is
shaped by the cultural and political environment of any given country or region, because the
local cultural values influence politics, and both politics and culture values influence scientists’
behaviour and performance. Whenever a scientific study is published, my first question is:
where do the authors come from? Their choice of topic and even their findings will be highly
influenced by their cultural background.

4. Considering the current state of our society, do you think science literacy among people has
contributed to the growth of our economy?

YES!!

5. How can science help in the pandemic we have right now?

Science can greatly help in solving this pandemic. With science we can develop more vaccine
that would directly help in fighting the said virus. Also, with science we can create more
machines and equipment that can help people adapt to the new normal or even going back to
what we used to do. With the help of science, we can modernized our front liner and create
more effective and efficient PPE.
