Describe a specific and unique example of each type of research design (Experimental,

Quasi-Experimental, Qualitative, and Correlational) and tell us why they fit the criteria for
each.

Experimental research- is used when research is looking to answer a question or

hypothesis on how tow variable affects one another. This is done by manipulating the
independent variable and randomly assigning participants to conditions (Saylor
Foundation, n.d.).

An example of an experimental research can be to find out if a cup of coffee truly helps
you wake up and have energy to get through the day. You can divide into two groups both
working full days in the same age group. One group would get a cup of coffee before
starting their day and the other would not. You can test how long it takes both groups to
start dragging and losing their energy.

Quasi-experimental research is similar to experimental in that they both are trying to
establish the relationship between an independent and dependent variable. However, they

differ in the fact that quasi-experimental research subjects are assigned to groups on non-
random factors (Saylor Foundation, n.d.).

An example of quasi-experimental research can be the use of new cancer drug. A

researcher can take on group of patients whose providers are using the new drug and
another group who is continuing with the old treatment. The research can study pre-
existing patients and their symptoms and compare the disease progression with the use of
o

the new drug and compare the data to those who are not.

Qualitative research is based on nonstatistical data analysis. This type of research aims to
create a hypothesis that a quantitative research can answer. It generally starts with a broad
question and collects a large amount of data from a small amount of people that is
“unfiltered”, naturalistic in nature. One way of conducting a qualitative research is through
ed d

interviews (Saylor Foundation, n.d.).

One example could be answering a question whether or not dreams influence our daily
mood. If we have a nightmare and we wake up scared, upset or terrified how does that
sh is

affect the mood that particular way. On the other hand, if you have a happy, loving dream
and you wake up smiling how will that affect your day? Does it affect one’s mood or we
Th

just tell ourselves it was just a dream and go on with our lives.

Correlational research is the measurement of two variables to assess a statistical

correlation without any manipulation, random assignments to conditions or “order of
conditions”. There can be three different results. There can be a positive correlation a
negative one or no correlation at all (Saylor Foundation, n.d.).

One type of question a correlation research can answer is whether or not couples start to
act in similar manners the longer they are together. Does the amount of time we spend with
one another influence how we act?
