There are several ways to classify engines. The cylinder arrangement determines whether the engine is inline or V-shaped. The valve arrangement refers to the positioning of inlet and exhaust valves as L, I, F, or T shapes. Cooling systems are either air or water-cooled, with air-cooled radiating heat through the engine. Different fuels like gasoline, diesel, natural gas are used depending on the engine type. The engine cycle has four strokes: intake, compression, combustion (power), and exhaust that turn the crankshaft.

1. Cylinder Arrangement- The in-line engine has a single row
of cylinders extending vertically upward from the crankcase and aligned with the crankshaft main bearings. The V type has two rows of cylinders, usually forming an angle of 60° or 90° between the two banks. V-8 engines (eight cylinders).
2. Valve Arrangement- According to the valve arrangement of
the inlet and exhaust valve in various positions in the cylinder head or block, the automobile engines are classified into four categories. These arrangements are named as 'L', 'I', 'F' and 'T'.
3. Process of Cooling- There are two types of cooling
systems: (i) Air cooling system and (ii) Water-cooling system. In this type of cooling system, the heat, which is conducted to the outer parts of the engine, is radiated and conducted away by the stream of air, which is obtained from the atmosphere.
4. Types of Fuel used for Particular Engine-
Hydrocarbon-based fuels which are gasoline, diesel, natural gas, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) have been generally used in the diesel and gasoline engines as a fuel. 5. Engine works in terms of its Cycle and Stroke- An internal-combustion engine goes through four strokes: intake, compression, combustion (power), and exhaust. As the piston moves during each stroke, it turns the crankshaft.
