PARABLE OF THE LOST SHEEP

Luke 15:1-7
1
Now all the tax-gatherers and the sinners were coming near Him to listen to Him.
2
And both the Pharisees and the scribes began to grumble, saying, "This man
receives sinners and eats with them."
3
And He told them this parable, saying,
4
"What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does
not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture, and go after the one which is lost, until
he finds it?
5
"And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
6
"And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to
them, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!'
7
"I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who
repents, than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance." (NASB)

The parable of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son are all in this chapter. And the reason that the Lord Jesus
used such illustration to His readers is because He was trying to refute the Pharisees and scribes regarding the way they
see Jesus Christ. And as what they are saying in verse 2, Jesus was making contact with sinners. And for them that is not
to be so! For them, a person who acknowledges himself as religious should not be having conversations with these
group of people. Yet Jesus Christ was with them – the publicans and sinners! So overhearing what the Pharisees and
scribes said, Jesus refuted their thinking. So then, the first principle we can get in this parable is the principle of
REFUTING EVIL. Whenever we see, hear, or feel that people are doing evil let us not let them live that way. We should
learn to refute wrongdoings that their lives will be corrected. But with the caution that you are living a holy life. It is hard
to teach people not to drink strong wine while you know for yourself that you are drinking. It hard for them to believe
our words if our life is painted with dust.

The second principle we can see here is the principle of BEING A GOOD STEWARD. The parable

hundred of sheep. If we will pause there, we can already see the stewardship of the man. Feeding 0929three

bit hard already. Taking care of a ten pigs a day is already burdensome. How about a hundred sheep?! And thru

for the lost one. If you have a thousands of pesos or dollars and lost a single cent of it, will you Fellowship
look for it? I–mean,
Aplaya what
is a cent compared to the thousands that you have to search for it? You see, when the sheep went missing, he showed
his care for its wellbeing. That is why he looked for it. The place where the man was is not written in the bible but it
definitely must be in a wide open space where he can pasture his sheep. So looking at its geographical situation in
searching for the sheep, it must have been so hard to look for it. Yet he still did. And this parable did not stopped in
giving us a third example. When he found the sheep in verse 5, it says there that he placed it upon his shoulders. Wow!
That is very nice! The sheep must have been crying when the man found him. It might have broken its leg or hungry or
very weak. And it is sometimes true to us. When we are lost, weak, broken, we long for someone to carry us and make
us feel that we are being loved. This man showed us to carry someone’s burden. Whatever the sheep was feeling that
moment, the man carried it with him. All in all, this man showed us how to take good care of what we own. Whatever it
is. Maybe you have a family, feed them well. You are in a school, study. Maybe you have plenty of work in the office, do
it well. You are earning, use them wisely. You are healthy, don’t abuse it. You have skills and talents, maximize it.

Lastly, when the man came home with the lost sheep he called out his friends and neighbors to rejoice with him. The
principle of SHARING YOUR BLESSINGS. The problem to most of us is that we celebrate on our own. We hide from
people when we are promoted. We tend to flee to another place when it is our birthday so that our neighbors won’t
know. We don’t want others to know that we are blessed. Because our thinking is that they will look for something they
could gain from our promotion or celebration, so we play hide and seek. But the good thing in this parable is that it
didn’t showed us that it is necessary to give people food to celebrate. Sharing your joy to them is already showing God’s
goodness in your life. Making them know that you are adding another year in your life shows the gratitude you have
from your Maker. And if we can, share something to them. But if not, it is not obligatory. The main point in this is that
when you feel that you are blessed by God, bless others also. Be it in kind or in deed or in word. Share your testimony.
