V. LESSON CONTENT:
If the value of trigonometric function sine of angle θ equals k, that is, sin θ = k,
then, it is equivalent to saying angle θ is the angle having sine function of value equal to
k. In symbol,
θ = arcsin k or θ = sin-1 k
Symbol “sin-1k” read as ‘the inverse of sine k”, interpreted as the angle having
sine value equal to k. Hence, an inverse trigonometric function represents an angle.
This symbolism for the inverse functions should not be confused with negative
exponents. The superscript”-1” is NOT an exponent, but a conventional notation for the
inverse function. To avoid confusion, arcsin k is used instead. Hence, sin -1k does not
1
mean (sin k)-1. Recall that (sin k)-1 is equivalent to =csc k .

In Calculus, Sin-1x, Cos-1x and Tan-1x are the most important inverse
trigonometric functions. However, there is often disagreement in the choice of
principal value of inverse secant and inverse cosecant. Some authors define the
π
value as between – π and - for negative value of trigonometric function secant
2
and cosecant. Relative to this and as much that they are seldom used, these
inverse trigonometric functions may be conveniently avoided.

Example 11.
We use the formula arccos x = 2n π ± θ, where θ = Arccos ½ = 60o.
Therefore, arccos ½ = 2n π ± 60o = 2(360o) n ± 60o.
To name some of the general values, we assume values of n. Thus,
when n = 0, arccos ½ = ± 60o
when n = 1, arccos ½ = 2 (360o) ± 60o = 780o and 660o
when n = 2, arccos ½ = 2 (360o) (2) ± 60o = 1500o and 1380o
The arcsine function is inverse function of trigonometric sine function. From the
−π π
plot of sine function, it is clear that an interval between and includes all possible
2 2
values of sine function only once. Note that end points are included.
