Prob. 1. A plate 0.60 mm distant from a fixed plate moves at 0.30 m/sec and requires a shear stress of 3
Pa to maintain this speed. Calculate the viscosity of the liquid between the plates and its kinematic
viscosity.

Prob. 2. A scow 6 m wide and 20 m long has a mass of 200,000 kg. Its center of gravity is 30 cm above
the water surface. Determine the following: (a) the depth of submergence. (b) the metacentric height
and righting moment when ∆𝑦 = 30 𝑐𝑚.

Prob. 3. Approximately what pressure must be applied to water to reduce its volume by 1.25% if the bulk
modulus of elasticity is 2.19 GPa?

Prob. 4. On one side, water stands level with the top of a vertical rectangular gate 4 ft wide and 6 ft high,
hinged at the bottom; on the other side water stands 3 ft below the top. What horizontal force applied
at the top of the gate is required to open it?

Prob. 5. If the pressure in a tank of oil (sp. gr. of 0.80) is 70 psi, what is the equivalent head :

a. In feet of oil
b. In feet of water
c. In inches of mercury

Prob. 6. For a gage pressure at A of −12 KPa, find the specific gravity of the gage liquid B.

Prob. 7. The curved surface represented by AB in Fig. A is the surface of the quadrant of a circular cylinder
4 m long. Determine the horizontal and vertical components of total hydrostatic pressure on the surface
and their location when r = 3 m, and z = 2 m

Prob. 7. Liquids A, B, and C in the container shown have specific gravities of 0.80, 1.0, and 1.60
respectively. With the liquid surfaces at the elevations shown what is the pressure in lb/in 2 (psi) on the
bottom of the tank? At what elevation will the liquid stand in each of the piezometer tubes?
