EXTENDED BY REFLECTING
1. Starting the interview with the five years old kid Ronan Rye Balonzo, a Kinder Garten pupil, the
child was somehow trying his best to remember the word listed as I observed only 5 out of 10
words the child was able to remember. At first the child was too distracted by the noise outside
the reason why it was difficult for him to remember the word, however, after reading the ten
words listed, he was able to remember five of the words out of order. Jillian a Grade 3 pupil was
able to remember 5 out of ten words that are listed also. Then Gabriel a grade 4 pupil was able to
remember 8 out of ten words that are listed. The children were doing good in remembering the
words, however, in order for them to be able to remember the words they need to read the words
repeatedly and a I observed the children, when it comes to remembering there is differences of
how accurate their mind applied the words listed. Although both Ronan and Jillian got the same
number of items, they remembered the differences is the level of difficulty of words they read.
Furthermore, the children were able to tell me what they did to remember the words after reading
and they all somehow have similarities with their answer. Ronan said “kasi utro beses ko tigbasa
kaya natandaan ko”, Jillian also said “binsa ko ki pirang beses tapos tinandaan ko po” and on the
other hand Gabriel said “tig basa ko ki pirang beses tapos tig tandan ko su nainot panduwa tapos
su sunod sunod ngani madali matandaan”.
2. In terms of retelling the story they all have differences; Ronan only retell the characteristics of the
characters of the story, but he was able to retell the last part of the story correctly. Jillian on the
other hand was able to tell who the antagonist is and who is the protagonist on the story, and she
was able to retell from the climax of the story till the denouement of the story. However, Gabriel
was able to retell the story correctly and in order. As I observed the children were able to retell
the story because it caught their interest, and they were able to retell the story because they
understand the flow of the story and they listened to what the story tells.
3. Gabriel told me that his teacher visits him to teach him how to rea, it only means that the schools
does focus on supporting the children’s developing in reading and understanding. Gabriel was
also able to share that he is not really good in reading English, so he sometimes gets some help
from his siblings to teach him how to read and understand English. He also said he was able to
learn from listening attentively from his teacher and he said he learn best when he is listening and
reading with someone guiding him how to read. It seems to me that their teachers are helping
them how to read because the children were able to recognize the words efficiency. In addition,
Gabriel said that their teacher is very helpful because their teacher teaches him and give him
activities to improve his reading. Also, schools were able to support their students improve
developing children’s metacognition by helping learners read and be aware of recognizing words
as well as understanding what they are reading.
