EXERCISE NO. 1
HOSPITAL PHARMACY ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION

I. OBJECTIVES
1. To familiarize the students with the different hospital pharmacy organizations
2. To be aware of the different drug distribution systems in different hospitals

II. DISCUSSION
The Pharmacy Department must be administered in an efficient way as a professional
component in a complex organizational setting. The department must be organized under the
direction of a professionally competent and legally qualified pharmacist. The director of
pharmacy services shall be responsible in the proper planning, implementing, supervising, and
coordinating of all the activities of the pharmacy department.

The department should be properly organized, meeting all the minimum requirements set
by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the licensure act of the Bureau of Licensing
and Regulation and the enhancement standards of the Hospital Operations Management services
based on the capabilities of the hospital to render and cater services.

The department must be integrated with the general services supplied by the hospital of
which it is a part. The director of pharmacy services must be assisted by a working staff of
pharmacists and non-pharmacists who are competent, of good moral character, mentally and
physically fit to perform their duties and responsibilities. A licensed pharmacist shall be on duty
at all hours when the pharmacy opens.

The pharmacy must be located strategically in the hospital to ensure that services are
readily available. The floor space must be adequate for all pharmacy operations and the storage
of pharmaceuticals should have proper lighting, ventilation, and proper equipment plan for
architectural design.

It must adopt an efficient drug distribution system which must be beneficial to the
patient. There must be concrete policies and procedures in the department in accordance with the
policies of the hospital. Adequate pharmaceutical and administrative facilities shall be provided
for the pharmacy department.
III. PROCEDURE
1. Choose one hospital and submit the name to the instructor for approval to avoid
duplication.

2. Secure a letter from the instructor requesting permission to conduct a hospital pharmacy
visit and survey of the chosen hospital.

3. Present the letter to the head of the hospital pharmacy department for approval.

4. Accomplish the hospital pharmacy profile based on the information gathered in the
hospital.

5. Submit to the instructor the organizational chart and physical layout of the hospital
pharmacy department, together with the profile.

6. Compare the different hospital pharmacy profiles to be able to determine the similarities
and differences in their organization and administration.
