Project: Road Towards A Green Environment

I. Summary of the Programme

The world has a great advantage from the use of polymers since approximately 1600 BC when the
ancient Mesoamericans first exercised natural rubber into balls, figures, bands, and such. The
invention of plastic in 1907 was considered a breakthrough, it has been observed that man relied
increasingly on the use of plastic and it soon became omnipresent in human’s daily lives. Plastic
is indeed responsible for countless facets of the modern life humanity experienced today— from
health, leisure activities, shelter, and numerous areas that humanity can benefit from. For numerous
years, humans only perceived the benefits of plastic and knew little knowledge of the damaging
consequences for human health, natural ecosystems, and the climate. Not long after as a span of
years it has been found that plastic has an intense impact not just on human health and life but also
the world and other living things that reside in it. This therefore became widely recognized as one
of the major problems and pressing environmental issues humanity has been continuously facing,
as rapidly increasing production of disposable plastic products overwhelms the world’s ability to
deal with them.
Plastic is indeed widely used nowadays because of its various applications that benefit human
lives. However, just like all products, when it’s disposed improperly and irresponsibly— plastic
will cause various negative impacts on the environment. The world is expanding and developing
from time to time, therefore we produce more waste than ever before, and treating waste is
something that will leave us still unable to fulfil our desire to have a sustainable development. If
humans won’t take preventive action to tackle this plastic pollution, issues, and problem— then
this is going to be with us for a long time.
The STI San Francisco, Agusan del Sur established the Project: Run Towards a Green
Environment that serves as a significant venue for student’s actions and movement towards
protecting, safeguarding, and conserving the environment for the future generations to come. In
this the students and teachers will be embedded with the proper knowledge, skills, attitudes,
behaviours, values, and more importantly connected plastic waste management practises in their
daily life and also to the entire school community. The aim for this programme is to educate
students and citizens, and provide various activities and movements that will serve as an eye-
opener for change. There are various plastic related activities that are planned and carried out
throughout the program. It aims to change the attitudes, values and behaviours of the school
students, teachers, stakeholders, citizens and also improve the ecosystem of the school and
community as well.

II. Background Information

he STI San Francisco, Agusan del Sur implement and conduct the Project: Road Towards Green

Environment through various environmental programs and activities
o Strengthen the partnership through active coordination with the allied government agencies
concerned with the conduct of the project

ii. Activities of the Implementation

a. Conduction of Orientation
The participants in this project conduct a school-based orientation for the youth; about
“Environmental Importance, Protection, and Conservation”. This contains mission, vision, and the
mandated programs and activities that help promote environmental awareness, conservation, and
protection as well as youth leadership.
Moreover, the students and visitors were encouraged to take part of the implemented activities and
be a member of the youth movement.

b. Construction of Building “School Green Bulletin”

The “School Green Bulletin” is a project in which a huge sized bulletin board is placed in the
school entrance and walkways where it’s free of obstruction and eye catching— intended for the
teachers, students, visitors, and passer-by to see and observe.
The construction of the “School Green Bulletin” was initiated and sponsored by the School Board
of Management, Parent-Teacher Association, School Alumni Association and Non-Governmental
Organizations (NGO’s). The main purpose of this “School Green Bulletin” is to spread or
disseminate and provide knowledge about environmental education and awareness to the school
community as well as to the local communities such as school authorities, stakeholders, and
parents to be able to create a conducive atmosphere by honing to practise sustainable ways of life.
With this project, the “School Green Bulletin” is able to disseminate the message in a wide-range
aspect about the importance of environmental preservation and conservation throughout the school
communities, especially displaying the various environmental information and knowledge about

plastic usage and waste management system along this “School Green Bulletin”. This became one
of the top priorities since plastic pollution is one of the phenomenal threats in our world nowadays;
and so with help and efforts from teachers, students, and NGO’s the “School Green Bulletin” has
characteristics and functions to practise the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle). In adopting the
3Rs method; the students and teachers will be educated gradually on environmentally responsible
consumer behaviour. The 3Rs may look like a small effort but it’s best to remember that small
actions bring great impact. Every action to reduce, reuse, and recycle will definitely contribute
towards reducing global warming, marine litter, and other various environmental issues and
problems that affect the sustainability of our world.

c. Building a “Waste Talent Sustainable Room Corner”

The “Waste Talent Sustainable Room Corner” aims to nurture and nourish the students' skills and
talents in art as well as improving their creativity and thinking skills. The creative and sustainable
corner that will be constructed in the unused 304 room will allow the students to use various waste
materials (e.g. plastic, bottles, straw, etc.) to create and design various artworks (made of waste)
and patterns of useful items that can be demonstrated, displayed in classrooms, and used as
costumes in school activities. The form teacher will lead the students to this “Creative and
Innovative Sustainable Room Corner”. This activity will definitely increase awareness of
managing plastic waste wisely and effectively.

d. The “PlasBer” Project (Plastic-Rubber Project)

The “PlasBer Project” initiative was a simple, creative, and enjoyable project that helped raise
student’s awareness of management of non-biodegradable rubbish such as plastic and rubber
waste. The “PlasBer '' consists of old rubber tires that are painted and constructed in different
materials that are human beneficial, and plastics that are packed tightly in a clean and dry, non-
biodegradable waste. These tires and bottles can then be used as building materials to create
alternative garden and house furniture, insulated fences and walls.
In our schools, the students and teachers are tasked and taught to collect unused rubber tires and
paint in various attractive patterns to be able to use it as a barrier or protection for growing plants,
and plastic waste at home and stuff to put all these into 1.5L plastic bottles to make fences and
bricks to utilize as borders or fences in the school garden.

e. The “X Bag” School Campaign

Through the implementation of “X Bag” school campaigns at school’s various corners such as
canteen, classroom, and respective offices— this therefore can reduce the school’s plastic usage
by reducing the consumption and reusing items. The “No plastic policy” shall be observed in the
school so that students and teachers can practice this action be it outside or inside the school
parameters
