JOB-3

To execute building measurement survey in the field.

26th February, 2013.

Measuring Tape

Least count of measuring tape is

1/8” or 1 sooter

OR 1/5 cm = 2 mm

Measuring tape is manufactured locally

There are different kinds of measuring tape:

Fiber Glass Tape

Steel Tape

Cloth tape

Metallic Tape

They all have their own advantages and disadvantages. Like steel tape remains straight when
extended but it can expand on heating under sun. Measuring tape has different markings on it.
On one side there are bigger marks for feet then competitively smaller markings for inches and
then even smaller markings for 1 sooter. On the other side there are bigger markings for meters,
then competitively smaller markings for cm and then even smaller markings for every 2mm.
 The measuring tape should remain straight and tight.
 Measurement should begin right from the beginning of the measuring tape.
 Reading should be recorded in meters (i.e. SI units)
 Care should be taken while reading a value from measuring tape. Values like 6.40m and
6.04m should not be confused with each other.

The result of this survey is a (rough) plan

During the practical we were told to measure the reading from the sill level, sill level of
some of the buildings were obvious but of others were very difficult to locate. Also the tape
doesn’t remain straight in all case because at some places there were different things attached to
the wall which we were measuring. It was a really tiring job it was very difficult to maintain our
temper. As the time passed it became more and more difficult to remain patient and take the
exact readings of the walls. Still we tried our best.
Q- From which part of the tape the measurement should start?

Answer- measurement should start from the very beginning of the tape.

Q- What is the smallest reading that you can take using a measuring tape?

Answer- the smallest reading that one can take using a measuring tape is 2mm or 1 sooter.

Q- What was the material and maximum length of the measuring tape provided?

Answer- We were provided the fiber glass measuring tape of maximum 30m length.

Q- What is the difference between 6.4m and and 6.04m?

Answer- 6.4 means 6 meters and 40 cm, whereas 6.04 mean 6 m and 4 cm.

Q- In which category of surveying does the job we did fall?

Answer- We did plane surveying in horizontal plane.

Q- Which buildings were included in the survey?

Answer- Usman Hall, Umer Hall, Canteen, Marriage Hall, Ayesha Hall, Main Block and Power
House.

Q- How can we convert meters in mm and centimeters?

Answer- meters can be converted into cm by multiplying by 100 and meters can be converted
into mm by multiplying it by 1000.

Q- Tell the name of different types of measuring tapes

Answer- Steel tape, fiberglass tape, cloth tape, metallic tape.

Q- What can you do if the tape is damaged somewhere in the beginning.

Answer- Start your measurement from 1 m and take the reading. Then subtract 1 from that
reading to get the final answer.

Q- What can you do if the length to be measured is greater than 30m?

Answer- measure the length upto 30m and mark a point then place the zero of the measuring
tape at this point and take the reading. If the measurement is still longer then repeat the process.
