COMPARATIVE ESSAY

The Tabon individual was the body that was discovered in the Tabon Caverns on the
Philippine Island of Palawan. There are two stories of the discovery of the Tabon man along the
Tabon caverns by Robert B. Fox and William Henry Scott. Both, conducted investigation into
Tabons man’s first discovery. First, if we took at the excerpt titles, Robert B. Fox is titled
“Tabon Cave: Archaeological Exploration and Excavation on Palawan Island, Philippines”,
while William Henry Scott is entitled “Pre Hispanic Source materials for the Study of Philippine
History”. Now that we know the excerpts titles, let’s look into the author’s background, Mr.
Robert B. Fox worked as an archaeologist, specializing in the excavation of human remains and
artifacts. William Henry Scott worked as an historian at the time, which included investigating
and analyzing current ideas and facts. Based on their profession, Robert B. Fox is more credible
than William Henry Scott, according to the author’s background.

The use of dates in both excerpts can help establish which author is more trustworthy in
the excerpt from Fox; he indicates that the original excavation on Tabon Cave took place
between June and July 1962, implying that he undertook the excavation himself at the time, but
William Henry Scott approach to the dates when it was discovered was more based on current
information that fox says in his excerpt and nowhere it said that Scott did mention about the
excavation. I can also literally add up my research about the dates on when actually was the
account definitely was written in 1965 while William Henry Scott for all intents and purposes
was written in 1968. The two alone definitely affects the reliability of the accounts on how
particularly comes first than the particularly other one in a subtle way.

Another notable variation between the two authors is how they order the events
surrounding the Tabon mans discovery. Robert B. Fox explains the sequence of events as though
it were witnessed firsthand, establishing him as a credible source on the Tabon man discovery.
He described the location while collecting data, estimating that the Tabon man lived between
22,00 and 24 years ago while Scott just describe the location as a kind of Little Stone Age
Factory, his description is insufficient to support Fox’s results.

The Fact that one account is more credible than the other does not negate the validity of
the other, but in terms of who discovered the Tabon man in the Tabon cave in Palawan, it was
unmistakably Robert B. fox. Their occupation also influences whether they are asserting it based
on experience or simply from “chat” as Fox claims. His background as an anthropologist
explains a lot about his expertise, which makes him more realistic and credible. Robert B. Fox
was a primary source in relation to our issue, whereas William Henry Scott was a secondary
source.
