(a) Increase both its Ia and p.f.
(b) Decrease Ia but increase p.f.
(c) Increase Ia but decrease p.f.
(d) Decrease both Ia and p.f.
Q4. When running under no-load condition and with normal excitation, armature current Ia Drawn by a
synchronous motor /3marks

(b) is large
(c) Lags the applied voltage V by a small angle
(d) Lags the resultant voltage ER by 90º.
Q5. The primary winding of an electric train transformer has 400 turns and the secondary has 50 turns. If the
input voltage is 120V (rms) what is the output voltage? /3marks
a) 30 V (rms)
b) 60 V (rms)
c) 15 V (rms)
d) 2.4 V (rms)
e) 960 V (rms)
Q6. A balanced star connected load is supplied from a symmetrical three- phase, 400V (line-to-line) supply.
The current in each phase is 50A and lags behind the phase voltage by 30°. Find phase voltage, phase
impedance and active and reactive power drawn by the load. /6marks
A synchronous motor is said to have normal excitation when its Eb= V. If field excitation is such that Eb <
V, the motor is said to be under-excited. In both these conditions, it has a lagging power factor, On the
other hand, if d.c. field excitation is such that Eb > V, then motor is said to be over-excited and draws a
leading current.
Q8. It is desired to measure a line current of the order of 2,000 A to 2,500 A. If a standard 5-amp ammeter is to
be used along with a current transformer, what should be the turn ratio of the latter? By what factor should the
ammeter reading be multiplied to get the line current in each case? /5marks
Q9. A 400 V, 3-φ, star-connected induction motor has a stator exciting impedance of (0.06 + j 0.2) Ω and an
equivalent rotor impedance of (0.06 + j 0.22) Ω. Neglecting exciting current, find the maximum gross power
and the slip at which it occurs. /5marks
Q11. Enumerate the possible reasons if a 3-phase motor fails to start. /5marks
Any one of the following reasons could be responsible:
4. Worn bearings due to which the armature may be touching field laminae, thus introducing excessive
friction.
Q12. A 600 kVA transformer is at full load with an overall power factor of 0.64 lagging. The power factor is
improved by adding capacitors in parallel with the transformer until the overall power factor becomes 0.95
lagging. Determine the rating (in kvars) of the capacitors needed. /4marks [334.8 kvar leading]
Q13. A 50 kVA, 5000/500V, 50Hz, 1-phase transformer has the high voltage winding with a resistance of 8
ohms and low voltage winding with a resistance of 0.06 ohms. The no load losses of the transformer amount to
1000W. Calculate the efficiency of the transformer, when delivering its full rated output at a power factor of
0.8? /5marks
1200W. If the slip is 5 per cent, determine (a) the rotor copper loss, (b) the total mechanical power developed
by the rotor, (c) the output power of the motor if friction and windage losses are 750W, and (d) the efficiency of
the motor, neglecting rotor iron loss.
Q18. Give the advantages of squirrel-cage motors compared with the wound rotor type.
Q19. The network shown in Figure below has a total active power of 2253W.
[(a) 3.516 58.40° Ω (b) 35.0 A (c) 4300 VA(d) 3662 var lagging (e) 0.524 lagging (f) 542.3 μF]
Q20. A circuit has an impedance Z= (3 + j4) Ω and a source p.d. of 50 30ے° V at a frequency of 1.5 kHz.
Determine (a) the supply current, (b) the active, apparent and reactive power, (c) the rating of a capacitor to be
connected in parallel with impedance Z to improve the power factor of the circuit to 0.966 lagging, and (d) the
