Chapter 1
Pages (1- 4)
Maria and Rosa are sisters. They were looking after their goats in the mountains
in the northern Italy. Maria was worried about the goats as they were getting thinner.
They didn't look well although there were plenty of food for them. Maria thought that
their goats were ill as they didn't want to eat the grass near the river. The grass looked
terrible! It was yellow because there was poison in the water. This poison was killing
the plants and it was making the goats ill, but Rosa didn't think so because the goats
were still alive.
Rosa didn't like working with animals. She preferred the town life and shopping.
Aunty Sylvia was going to take her shopping next week. She was going to buy her a
beautiful new dress for the festival in September. Antonio and Ricardo were their
cousins. They were very busy working in the forest all the time. They had to cut
down a lot of trees before the winter.
Maria wanted to ask her science teacher , Mrs. Bonetti, who was very interested
in science and plants about the river to know what was wrong. A few days later ,
Mrs. Bonetti was teaching a lesson about cement and concrete. She asked about how
to make cement and Maria said that they could make it by mixing cement with sand
and water. But nobody knew how to make concrete, so Mrs. Bonetti told them that
they could make concrete by mixing cement with sand and small stones and water,
but with a recipe like cooking. If you don't use enough cement , the concrete would
not be strong enough.
Maria asked Mrs. Bonetti to tell her about the dirty water in the river which is
called river pollution and it can come from chemicals that are used in farming and
factories. If a river is polluted, several things may happen. The fish in the river may
die. The chemicals may kill the river-plants. If you water your fields, the chemicals in
the water may kill your crops. And if you drink very polluted water ,it may kill you.

job was finished , they sat down in the sunshine on the hillside for sandwiches.
Antonio always enjoyed the view from the hillside. He looked down to the lake in the
valley and could see part of the new dam that held back the lack. He could also see
the mining factory below the dam, and a long way their village.
Antonio asked his brother why they didn't build several dams instead of such a
big dam. Without the dam , there would be no factory and no jobs. They made
precious metals from the minerals that they took out of the mines. The factory was in
a good poison. It needed electricity and water, and that was close to the mines.
Ricardo wanted to get a job in the factory as they paid much more money than tree –
cutting. He wanted to earn more money to buy a bigger motorbike, but Antonio
wanted to stay and work in the open air as he thought money was not important.
Maria and Rosa were on the hillside a few kilometers down the valley. They were
looking for one of their goat. It was missing. They found it close to the high wall that
went round the factory. The goat couldn't move as it had its head between two
branches of a bush. To set it free, Rosa pulled one of the branches to one side while
Maria pulled the goat's back legs. From the other side of the wall, Maria and Rosa
heard two men talking about a problem. It was a problem with the tank. When it was
full, it would all flow throw the pipe into the river.

To find out where the tank was, Rosa and Maria followed the wall back to
the river. Just before the river, they found the place where the pipe came
through the bottom of the wall, A thin stream of yellow , silvery water was
flowing out of the pipe and into the river, All factories pollute rivers. You can't
have industry without pollution. Pollution kills people, animals and crops. If
everybody knew about that, the factory would close and people there would
lose their jobs.
Maria wanted to have a look at the dam. They had a science lesson last week
about concrete and cement and dams. She wanted her teacher know about the
cracks high up in the wall of the dam. There were little streams of water
running down the wall of the dam. The water was coming down the dam from
those cracks. Rosa wasn't interested in goats o dam. She only wanted to get a
job in a dress shop in the town when leaving school. That would be in one
year's time, but she couldn't wait.
Maria thought of telling her science teacher about the pipe and the dam. She
would tell her cousins Antonio and Ricardo too. If you mixed concrete and used
too much cement. You would lose money because cement is more expensive
than sand. And if you mixed concrete and you didn't use cement , the cement
wouldn't be strong enough , so the bridge or the building would fall down.

Chapter 4

The next day , Rosa stayed at home on her own to make a skirt, but Maria went
out with her science teacher, Mrs Bonetti. They both walked up the valley to the end
of the pipe. Mrs Bonetti took photos of the end of pipe, the dirty water and the dead
plants. She asked Maria to hold the front page of the newspaper next to the pipe,
facing the camera and then next to the dirty water. Mrs Bonetti brought that day's
newspaper so as to make people recognize the date and the photo on the front page.
So the manger of the factory couldn't say that it was an old photo.
Then Mrs Bonetti and Maria went to have a look at the dam. They walked
towards the dam wall. They walked round the outside of the factory, along the track
and through some trees they were at the top of the dam. Mrs Bonetti sat down on the
dam wall, She rubbed her finger along the line between the stones. Then she looked
at her dusty finger. She said that they used too much sand when they built the dam.
There was not enough cement in the mixture. There were lots of cracks at the top of
the dam.
The next day , Mrs Bonetti took the samples of water and plants into the school
and did some tests. She was shocked as those samples contained cyanide and mercury
which were dangerous chemicals and those shouldn't be in the river. She went home
and made some phone calls. Finally she got the email address of a reporter who did
reports on pollution for TV company. Mrs Bonetti typed her report and emailed it to
the reporter. She also emailed him the photos that she had taken with her digital
camera.
Ten days later, there was a report on TV about the factory, the river and the pipe.
A lot of people were shocked when they found out that their river was polluted. They
called a meeting for the next evening at
p.m. in the village hall to discuss the problem. Ricardo was excited, he
saw an advert in the newspaper about jobs at the mining factory. After the
interview Ricardo rode out of the factory on his scooter. He stopped and
looked up at the dam as he wanted to check it out.

Chapter 5
Pages (19-22)
At the meeting in the village hall, they discussed the polluted river. Mrs
Bonetti explained that the mining factory used chemicals to separate the metals
from the rock dust. The governor of that region allowed both the dam and the
factory. The man who built the dam was a friend of the governor. The governor
was getting richer while the in the village were getting sicker. While the village
people were having their meeting , Ricardo was looking at the dam. He was too
shocked. He had never seen those big cracks in the dam wall. And there were
streams of water running down the dam wall. He decided to warn people.
Ricardo got on his scooter and rode down the bumpy track. When he reached
the factory, the manger was walking out of the gate. Ricardo explained every
thing to the manger who rang several numbers, but there were no answer. The
manger couldn't ring but mobile as there was a hill between the village and
them. Mobiles didn't work there. The manger asked Ricardo to go and warn the
village people and the manger would warn the people who were still there in the
factory. They would turn off all the machines.
Ricardo got on his scooter and rode down to the village at too speed. He
knew that the situation was getting worse. As he was riding down to the village,
a large stone fell out of the dam wall. A spry of water came 10 meters out of the
wall.

Chapter 6
Pages (23- 27)
Almost nobody believed Ricardo. People thought that he wanted to stop the
meeting as he was seen when he was going to get a job in the factory. They thought
that the manger paid him to stop the meeting with a silly story about the dam. Mrs
Bonetti told them that they had to escape up the hill where it was safer as she had
seen the dangerous dam herself. Quickly all people ran to their houses Ricardo
carried his Gran "an old woman" because she said that she would stay at her bed.
Rosa couldn't decide which of her clothes she should take with her. Ricardo said that
he was wrong because of the danger they were facing which was more important than
money and motorbikes. High above the valley , some of people were not at all
pleased. They didn't believe they were in danger. Soon they heard a noise like
thunder coming down the valley towards them.

Chapter 7

First there was a cloud of dust in the air. Then a white wall of water. It
covered the whole valley. The water thundered , trees broke into pieces
and the flood hit the top houses of the village. Many people cried. All the
wooden farm huts disappeared in the flood. Some houses at the sides of the
valley stayed up. It was like a soup of trees and stones and pieces of wood.
Nobody moved for an hour. There was still a strong river flowing fast
through the valley. Finally , it was safe enough to go down into the village.
Some people cried. Other people were happy that their houses were still
standing. Rosa and Maria's house had completely gone. They would stay
with Antonio and Ricardo who would help them rebuild their house.
The next day, the minister arrived by helicopter. He decided to visit the
village because he saw the pollution report on TV. He promised that the
government would give them money to rebuild their houses and buy
animals for their farms. He also promised money to rebuild the village
center and shops there. The minister gave instructions to his secretary who
took the following notes:
a) They must remove the governor from his job because he allowed the
dam and the mining factory.
b) The police must arrest the man who built the dam as he took money
from the state and built a dangerous dam. He must go to prison.
c) The factory manger can rebuild the mining factory because the
factory and the mines provide jobs. But they must pay a big fine
because he polluted river.
d) He must also put dirty outlet pipe (into the river) up stream of the
intake pipe (from the river). So if he puts dirty water into the river, it
will flow back into his factory!
e) They should built some small dams instead of building large dams.
