Activities Activity 1- Analyzing headings and photos Ask students to read the title of the short story. Then, have them  examine the photo
carefully. Based on these sources,  ask students to create a list of  words and  ideas  that they think might be related to this
article.
Activity 2. Vocabulary:  Word Inference Place students in groups and have them infer the meanings of the words in bold font
taken from the story.
Activity 3- Prediction and Character Organizer Charts
Activity 4- . The teacher will ask students to read the selection, The Gift of the Magi by William Sydney Porter (O. Henry) on
EnglishTek 9 Anthology. Marginal questions on the selection will be answered orally. As they read, they will answer the
worksheet on EnglishTek 9 Anthology, p. 159. 2. After reading, the teacher will ask them the following questions: • What is the
selection about? • What have you learned from the story? • How is the selection related to the lesson theme, Selflessness? • Are
there some questions or predictions about the story that you would like to share? Then, the students will answer the
comprehension questions on EnglishTek 9 Anthology, p. 160. 3. The teacher will help students recognize irony in the selection
(refer to EnglishTek 9 Worktext, p. 45). Irony is a form of literary technique in which words are used to express contradiction or
difference between what is expected to happen and what actually happens. The two common examples of irony are situational
irony and dramatic irony.

Asynchronous : Create a comic strip to show how Della and Jim are feeling at different points in the story. Use a website or
online comic-strip generator (for example: www.ToonDo.com or http://stripgenerator.com/strip/create/) to create a comic strip.

Make sure to include pictures of Della and Jim where appropriate. Draw a thought bubble above the character(s) in each scene.
Write inside the bubble what you imagine the characters was feeling or thinking at that point in the story.
VI. Assessment
HOME CONNECTIONS
Ask students to explain irony to someone in their homes. They should ask their family member if they've encountered any ironic
situations lately. If they have, students should ask them to share the examples. Students should bring some stories back to the
class for sharing.
