WEEK 7 and 8 - Comparative Competence Strategies in Various Speech Situations

WEEK 7-8
Learning Competencies:

a. Identifies type of speech style


b. Identifies social situations in which each speech style is appropriate to use.
c. Observes the appropriate language forms in using a particular speech style.

Communicative?Speech Style
 The way you communicate has a big impact on how you get on with people and get the thing
you want. Good communication skills can help you avoid conflict and solve problems - there
also important for making friends and having healthy relationships.

TYPES OF SPEECH/COMMUNICATIVE STY

1. Intimate - it is a style among intimate members of a family or friends that do not need a
complete language with clear articulation. It is enough to use short utterances. Another
characteristic of this style is grammar unnecessarily used here, because it can bring disorder
to this intimate style.

2. Casual - also called as informal type of speech. A casual form of information sharing
typically used in personal conversations with friends of family members, etc.

3. Consultative - it is used in some group discussion, regular conversation at school,


companies, trade, speech conversation, etc. It was the most operational among the other
style. One of the characteristics of consultative language is its tendency f average speech,
which is higher than formal style. The sentence tend to be shorter (resemble or indeed,
phase) and less well planned (tend to spontaneous). since it is spontaneous, people tend to
repeat some unnecessary words, choose or choice many slang.

4. Formal - A type of verbal presentation or document intended to share information and


which conforms to established professional rules, standards and processes and avoids using
slang terminology.

5. Frozen - the most formal communicative style that is usually used in respectful situation or
formal ceremony.

6. Aggressive - It is expressed in a forceful and hostile manner and usually involves aliening
messages such as ‘you -statement’s (blaming the other person and accusing them of being
wrong or at fault) and labeling. In addition, the persons tone of voice and facial expression is
unfriendly.

7. Passive - It involves putting your needs last. You don’t express your thoughts or feeling, or
ask for what you want.
ACTIVITY: “Do it with me!”

Instruction: Students will be divided into seven groups. Each group will be having a short
presentation in which they will create a social situation where each type of speech being
appropriately used. After the presentation, each leader of different group will give
comment regarding with the presentations.

 Why is it important to use appropriate type of speech in a certain situations?


 Based on your activity, do you think you have observes appropriate language forms inn
using a particular speech style?
