EDENG 107: Literary Criticism
Task 2: Reflection Paper about the value of critical analysis as a soon to be Language and
Literature Teacher.

“Critical thinking and curiosity are the key to creativity” – Amala Akkineni. As a future teacher
of Language and Literature and as a student of this course literary Criticism, I think that the
value of critical analysis is that it is a way to be more creative. Creativity is very important to
teachers of language and Literature. Creativity will not only help us to be an effective teacher but
it can also help us to think and analyze things more, like it can help us to think outside the box.

Critical analysis in definition as per research is a subjective writing because it expresses the
writer’s opinion or evaluation of a text and as a future teacher it is very important that we can
express our opinion and evaluation on everything based on what we understand and we should
be able to always identify all the main ideas correctly. There are texts that was interpreted
differently based on who interprets it and honestly, I believe that there are no right or wrong
when it comes to interpretation or opinions since everyone is entitled for their own opinion and
interpretation, but there are some cases that a message or a story should be analyzed perfectly to
send the right message and as a teacher it is our responsibility. We have to make sure that we can
send the right message and interpretation to the students so that they will not misinterpret what
we are teaching.

There are also students who will have struggles in understanding a text, a book or a lesson and
we are the one that should teach them and guide them to understand easily. Critical analysis will
also improve our thinking and analytic skills, it will not only help us to teach students but it can
help us in our daily live. Teaching profession doesn’t just end once we got the job. Once we are
already educators we will not stop studying more because learning is a never ending process and
if we have a good critical thinking skills we will never get lost and we can contribute a lot of
things in the field of education. We will be able to pen our own book that the students and future
educators can use someday.

In conclusion, I believe that as early as now, we should start practicing doing critical analysis so
we can enhance our critical thinking skills by reading lots of books and analyzing it, practice
makes perfect after all.
