1. What new information did I learn from this Module? Discuss.

Through our discussion and readings on this particular topic, I was able to learn how
critical reading is important in evaluating text. Critical reading is one of the categories of reading
skills that involves studying and evaluating the text closely in terms of relevance, validity, and
logic. At first, I thought that critical reading is just about finding the message of a once specific
text or visual, but later on, after we discuss this topic, I realized that critical reading also conveys
the purpose, target audience, and various ways of presenting a text. It tends us, readers, to act
like investigators since we tend to break down different details in one specific text to appreciate
and understand it better. Aside from that, we also discuss different strategies in evaluating texts
and images in multicultural contexts. For example, we were given sample questions that we
may use to critically evaluate a text or an image. Our teacher also gave us several activities,
such as analyzing several video and image materials, which could help us to develop our critical
reading skills. This topic also teaches us to be critical in giving judgment on things that we read
and see.

2. What did I not understand from or in this lesson? Explain.

I must say that I don't have a lot of questions about this particular topic since we already
learned most of it way back in high school. Despite the minimal interaction due to restrictions on
face-to-face classes, still, I understand the lesson well. Our teacher gives us a variety of
engaging and useful learning resources, which makes studying this lesson a joy for me. Apart
from that, our synchronous class this week was extremely educational because both of us and
our instructor were exchanging thoughts about the topic, making our lesson both informative
and engaging. Aside from the proposed learning outcomes that I previously knew, our teacher
presents additional information that may be relevant to our current topic, making the discussion
highly educational. I just wish that we have more time to discuss this topic since I really found it
interesting. I also forget to ask for some tips aside from the examples given in the module on
how to improve my critical reading skills.

3. Cite anything from the lesson which can be useful to you now or in the future. Why will it be
useful to you? Explain.

Learning how to become a critical thinker was one of the skills I gained from this
topic that I believe will be valuable to me today and in the future. Learning how to read
critically makes us think critically as well. That’s why this topic is so important for us
since it teaches us not only to read critically but also how to think objectively. Critical
thinking is an important skill that we may use in all aspects of our lives. There is always
a problem to be solved or an important decision to be made. Defining and
understanding critical thinking can be helpful when it comes to figuring out a valuable
solution to an issue. It helps us to evaluate things critically so that we can avoid further
issues due to wrong decisions. Critical thinking also allows us to analyze information
and make an objective judgment. By impartially evaluating the facts related to a matter,
you can draw realistic conclusions that will help you make a decision. Being able to
properly analyze a situation and come up with a logical and reasonable conclusion is
highly valued by employers, which is essential for my future job as a seafarer. That's
why I am thankful that we were able to discuss this type of topic in this subject.
