Activity:

1. Have you been in this kind of situation below?

 Yes, being confused and worried about how my choices could turn out.

2. Site a moment in your life/lives that you have encountered such situations.

 I remember when I'm thinking about whether I was going to grab or let go of the opportunity
that was given to me by the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA). We all know
that PMMA is one of the best and premier maritime academies here in the Philippines.
Thousands of aspiring cadets dream to be part of the PMMA blue line, as it gives wonderful
careers and opportunities for aspiring seafarers. But pursuing the PMMA cadet program is
not easy, as there was a lot of challenges you must need to overcome in order to enter the
academy. And luckily, I was able to surpass all examinations like the medical, neuro, and
entrance examinations, which earned me a spot in the PMMA probationary training. At first,
I am happy since I was part of 526 (out of 8063) aspirant cadet passers nationwide. I thought
that I can pull it off, I just need to prepare my body for physical activities as PMMA conduct
rigorous and extreme training. But halfway through my PMMA preparation, I was exhausted
and burned out. The physical training I had prepared did not go over well with my body, and
I began to doubt myself. I wanted to enter the academy physically and mentally ready, as the
cost of attending that academy is expensive. I truly wanted to take advantage of this
opportunity, but since I am not physically active, I felt helpless. I try my best to continue my
training, but my body is the one that gives up on my system. That's why I'm deciding that
time whether I will going to grab this opportunity or not. It is a tuff decision to make since it
is also all about my future. Given that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I am worried
about how my choice will turn out.

3. How did you decide?

 The first thing I do is to ask my parents for some advice to help me to decide. I raise my
concern and problem to them to guide me since I know that they are the only person that
could help me. And I remember clearly how my mom responded me to my problem. "Di kapa
nga nagsisimula, pero sumusuko kana", that was she said. And that was a wake up call for
me. From that moment, I decided to try my faith at pmma and resume my physical training
for my preparation in the academy. My parents also assure me to not worry in the financial
aspect as they realy wanted me to persue my dreams. Sadly, I only stay in PMMA for 1 week,
as I cannot endure my backpains and extreme tremors to my body. But entering PMMA is the
best decision that I have. I did not regret it, as it provides me alot of life lessons that I could
not able to learn outside the academy.

4. In your own perspective, how can Philosophy help you as a student?

 Philosophy could help me as a student since it could serve as my guiding principle in life and
shape me into the person I am today. By studying philosophy, I can improve my reasoning
and critical skills, which I can use in academics and daily living. Because of philosophy, I
believe that I am well prepared for any task or situation that will be placed in front of me. I
am very satisfied with my decision as it made me a more thoughtful person in all areas of life.
Philosophy teaches us to think outside the box and solves our problems in the most creative
ways.

5. Can Philosophy help you in solving your problems? How?

 Yes, since studying philosophy improves our ability to evaluate and resolve problems. That’s
because philosophy teaches us techniques like observation, intuition, and logic. By adopting a
philosophical mindset and learning to analyze statements and ideas with a critical eye, you
become a critical thinker. Using critical thinking, which we are able to learn in studying
philosophy, can help us break problems down to their essence and solutions. It gives us the
guidelines and boundaries that keep us on track in life. That's why I conclude that philosophy
was developed as a way to solve problems in the form of big questions. It makes sense that it
would be useful for any problem.
