Identification:
In december 2019, the world was shocked with an outbreak of a respiratory virus in the city of Wuhan,
the capital city of Hubei province of the republic of China, recently known as the novel coronavirus or
COVID-19. Corona virus infection or COVID-19 is caused by coronavirus, which is a group of viruses
that infect the respiratory system. In most cases, coronaviruses only cause mild to moderate respiratory
infections, such as flu. However, this virus can also cause severe respiratory infections, such as
pneumonia, Middle-East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
(SARS). This virus belongs to a group of coronavirus that can infect human. It is suspected that the
Corona virus was initially transmitted from animals to humans. However, it was later discovered that
the Corona virus was also transmitted from human to human. The virus spread so rapidly that it has
become a worldwide pandemic within only two months.
Description:
The name “Coronavirus” is given to this group of viruses based on their appearance under a
microscope. The word “Corona (the Latin of “Crown”)” is chosen because their appearance is similar
to a solar corona with spikes around their outer membrane which makes it look like an actual crown
especially with their spherical shape. Their size is around 120 nm (nanometer). There isn’t any way for
us yet to know the actual color of a coronavirus because no official site released the information about
did to this moment. But, you may find some pictures on the internet where it is colored red or yellow.
This virus affects differently toward different people. Some may develop mild to moderate symptoms
which may not required special treatment from the paramedic and some may not even be affected at all
although they are already exposed to the virus. But, the effect can also be severe which might ends with
death. There are several signs that we can use to tell when someone is infected by COVID-19. These
symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath, tiredness, sore throat, even diarrhea and runny
nose.
This virus spread so easily through droplets from coughs and sneezes. It might expose anyone within
1.5 meters radius from the person who is already infected by this virus and turn them into virus carrier.
The worst part of all this is that we may not realize that we have been infected until it is too late,
because most cases show that symptoms are showing up within 14 days of exposure to the virus and
within these days we may have infected more people. That is the reason why, governments in some
countries decided to undergo lockdown or social distancing method in the spirit of stopping the virus
spread.
