CORONA DISEASE VIRUS OR COVID-19

From the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), at the end of
December 2019, Chinese public health authorities report on a case of acute respiratory safety
in Wuhan City, Hubei province, China. Chinese scientists immediately identify the new
coronavirus as the main causative agent. This disease is now referred to as Corona Virus
Disease 2019 or COVID-19.
The World Health Organization gives a name to the disease COVID-19 because it
doesn’t refer to a geographical location, an animal, a person or group of people which can
lead to stigma. They also want to make it pronounceable and relate to the disease. This virus
is officially named SARS CoV-2, or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2
because it is genetically very similar to the SARS corona virus which is responsible for the
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), outbreak in 2002. So SARS-CoV-2 causes
COVID-19. Coronavirus that circulates among humans is typically benign, and it causes
about a quarter of all common cold illnesses. But occasionally, coronavirus that circulates in
animal reservoir mutate just enough to where it is able to start infecting and causing disease
in humans if it is given an opportunity. COVID-19 most likely starts with bats, but this time
the intermediate host is probably a pangolin, an animal that looks like a cross between an
anteater and an armadillo. That is based on the fact that scientists identify coronavirus in
pangolin that is 96% genetic match to SARS-CoV-2.
At a microscopic level, coronavirus is single strand positive sense RNA viruses with
protein spikes on their surface that look a bit like a crown under a microscope. Besides
looking majestic, these spikes allow the virus to invade cells lining the respiratory tract and
lungs. After binding, the coronavirus enters and takes over the cellular machinery to make
more and more copies of itself so it can spread to the surrounding cells and gets into the
mucus. Sometimes the infection is mild and some people do not develop any symptoms at all.
For others, COVID-19 can develop symptoms that can range from mild symptoms like fever,
cough, and shortness of breath, all the way to serious problems like pneumonia. In addition to
causing disease, coronavirus can spread quickly. Usually this virus spreads when people
cough or sneeze, and tiny droplet containing the virus is released. This virus can also be
found in a person’s stool, in a rare situations coronavirus transmits from one apartment to
another within a residential building. Unfortunately there is no vaccine currently available to
protect against COVID-19. So the goal is to avoid human to human transmission, starting
with isolating people with COVID-19. Coronavirus does not usually spread over long
distances in the air, but it can travel roughly 3 feet or 1 meter from one person to another on
tiny droplet of saliva, which is produced when someone is coughing or sneezing. In addition,
some strains of coronavirus can survive on surfaces for over a day. In the meantime, the best
strategy is prevention that includes careful hands washing, avoiding traveling to disease
outbreak area and crowded places when possible, and avoiding touching your T-zone.
