Position paper about academic freeze

Since the first month of cross country isolation, many schools need to be closed because of the
widespread virus. Some react to the Pandemic by advancing on the online platform stages for
both the students and instructors. Briones, DEPED secretary, communicated her confidence
about the online classes. According to her speech "the education must proceed even in the
midst of the pandemic".

As a student, I’m in line with the academic freeze because we all know that online classes are a
setup wherein we need to purchase a device and pay for the internet bills that numerous Filipino
families cannot afford during this time of a crisis. And according to the Philippines Statistics
Authority, During the month of April 2020 it is stated that 17.7% or equivalent to 7.3 are jobless
Filipinos.

There is also a fear of being academically left behind, because of the mental and emotional
burden that many students will do whatever they can to escape. So as the result, the transition
to online classes would place some Filipino students at a significant disadvantage. If there is no

internet access, how can students do their study work? How are they able to communicate with

their instructors? How will they learn? Education is one of the privileges of wealthy people

because they can have a laptop and a secure internet connection. Also, some people still need

to grow, and social contact is a key component of their well-being. Due to sudden loneliness,

depression.

The Philippines faces unparalleled health, economic and social challenges. There are "normal"
days behind us. Therefore, we should stop trying to keep up with "normal stuff in the "new
normal days. Until all the struggles mentioned above are adequately addressed and mass

testing is well underway, freezing the academic year might be our best choice for now.
