BSED III-VALUES EDUCATION____________________________________________

Summary of meaning, purpose and nature of Values Education as Community Service

Values Education as enacted in 2019, is being institutionalized to be integrated in
the school curriculum with the intent to promotion of good manners and right conduct
while learners are still in the learning acquisition process. It is to strengthen not only the
cognitive aspect of the learners, as well as building a foundation of good character that
learners would definitely use as definitely they finally take their steps out of the stage of
being a student, and interact with the real world to live the life that they love to live.
In general, Values Education as Community Service seeks to foster social
responsibility among students by purposely acquiring essential learning theories that
would feed them intellectually, and, sooner will be able to apply those learnings to show
love for the community through a voluntary work that would meaningfully benefit the
recipients and the community as a whole. This is to promote the value of citizenship
among students that will hone them into members of community who adhere to the
community’s development and who willingly participate with the process.

Differentiating Community Service and School Learning Service

Community service pertains to the engagement of students in activities that
primarily focus on the service being provided as well as the benefits the service
activities have on the recipients and to the community as a whole. Meanwhile, service
learning is a pedagogical tool by which a student learns in the classroom and at the
same time volunteers with a planned activity that is usually community-based and
engages in reflection activities to deepen their understanding of what is being taught.

The current state of local and global communities as basis for community development
and services:
It’s almost been ten months since the outbreak of COVID-19, and deaths are
accelerating in many parts of the world. As of 2020, more than 33.7 million confirmed cases and
over one million deaths, as recorded by World Health Organization (WHO). All of us are
suffering, various sectors especially health, education, economic, livelihood, and so. Many
people lost their jobs due to the pandemic which lead to changes in the working sector; even the
learning and teaching modality shifted from the typical face-to-face to online distance mode.
The number of Filipinos without jobs reached 4.6 million in July 2020 as the
country grapples with the economic fallout of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19)
pandemic as the Philippine government shown in their survey data. The top three
regions in terms of the numbers of unemployed are Metro Manila, CALABARZON
region, south of Manila, with about 886,000 unemployed, and the Central Luzon region
north of Manila, about 552,000.

Suggested ways in addressing specific community concerns through community service

program:
In addressing the tremendous impact of the pandemic such as financial crisis and
adjustments to online learning and teaching approach, youth can have their part to
minimize it through some community service programs:
 Conduct a workshop about entrepreneurship for teens and adults.
 A seminar on financial management.
 A simple cooking tutorial that can be used for profit.
 A 45-minute tutorial for grades 1 and 2 to help them doing their modules.

Reason of choosing Values Education as a major course among other majors:

Honestly, I chose to choose Values Education as my major out of fear. During
the orientation, I had to grab a slot for this major because I feared to lose BU. Initially,
the major course that I wanted to take back then was Filipino, but, since I was a
waitlisted enrollee, I thought, I wouldn’t be able to take my desired major for its limited
slot which necessarily were allotted for qualified students. In fact, when I finally got the
COR, I was half-frowned because it was not the major that I wanted ever since.
Meanwhile, I am pursuing this because I want to stand for my decision of choosing Bicol
University.

Understanding the Nature of Values Education as Community Service:

Primarily, learners will be able to put their learning into practice through
community service. The fact that Values Education aims to produce individuals with
right conduct, develop moral values, mental and social values, good manners, and
personality of the people, provide knowledge of the rules needed to function relating to
other people, and to seek the development in the student a grasp of certain underlying
principles, together with the ability to apply these rules intelligently, and to have the
settled disposition to do so.

Issues and concerns prevalent in various local and global communities:

Significant milestone on the current local and global community issues and concerns in
different aspects (health, education, etc.):
Amid the suffering and population lockdowns as the fruition of pandemic, there are
also significant changes occur. Despite the changes in work environment and the
shifted learning and teaching approach, we, Filipinos always find a reason to survive.
While the Philippine government is doing its best to address especially the health and
economic crisis, many are doing their own strategies to live and survive everyday. In
fact, it’s the spirit of resiliency that makes all of us choose to survive. As well, parents
and students are both striving to pursue academic enhancement through online
distance and or blended learning—parents strive by supporting their children both in
financial and emotional matters.
