Define Preposition? How to use and where to


use an appropriate preposition.
Discuss it in detail.
 Literal meaning:

pre stands for “before,” and position stands for “to place.”

 Definition:

“Preposition is a word that comes before a noun, pronoun to indicate


modification and relation to the other words of the sentence. It also
introduces an object.”

Examples:

I. Amna is sitting on the bench.


II. She threw the garbage in the bin.
III. He was hiding behind the curtain.
IV. Aslam placed the book under the table
V. The ship was sailing across the ocean.

In the above examples, on, in, behind, under, and across are prepositions.

 Kinds:
There are five kinds of Preposition;
1. Simple Preposition
2. Compound Preposition
3. Double Preposition
4. Participle Preposition
5. Phrase Preposition
Types and Uses of Preposition

 Prepositions of Place:

“These prepositions are used to indicate various types of places.”

Preposition Uses
In For Places having a boundary
On For Surface of things
At Particular places
Above For Higher positions
Under For Lower positions

Examples:
I. Aslam placed the utensils in the cupboard.
II. He drew a painting on a wall.
III. She was waiting for me at the bus stop.
IV. The plane was flying above the clouds
V. The cat was hiding under the table

 Prepositions of Time:

“These prepositions are used to indicate time in different aspects.”

Preposition Uses
In For months or years, Specific Time, Century
On For Days and Dates
At For Time of clock or particular Time

Examples:
I. Amna was born in 2004.
II. He will come here in winter
III. We are going there on Sunday.
IV. Aslam and Ali will come to my place on the 5th of July.
V. He opens the shop at 6 O’ clock.
VI. Why did he come to your house at night?

 Prepositions of Direction:

“These prepositions are used to indicate the direction of something.”

Preposition Uses
to For Movement or motion
over Direction of motion
into While Entering or looking inside
across For Movement from one side to another
through For Movement from inside or outside
Examples:
I. They are going to the amusement park.
II. The dog ran over the fence.
III. Ali threw the ball into a stream.
IV. The ship sailed across the river.
V. The bullet went through his body
 Prepositions of Agent:

“These prepositions are used to indicate certain actions performed by


something or someone.”

by For actions
with For object or instrument

Examples:
I. This play is written by Shakespeare.
II. The mansion was constructed by Aslam’s father.
III. He is writing a letter with his blue pen.

 Prepositions of Manner:

“These prepositions are used to express how a particular thing took place
or is done.

by/on/in To show how something happened
with To show specific behavior

Examples:
I. Ali goes to college by bus.
II. She went to the market on foot.
III. Amna went to the party in a taxi.
IV. He threw the ball with anger.

 Prepositions of Source:

“These prepositions are used to indicate the source or motive.”

from To show origin

Examples:
I. Aslam and Ali are from Pakistan.
II. I bought these shoes from Oman.

 Prepositions of Possession:

“These prepositions are used to indicate property or thing that is owned


by someone.”

Preposition Uses
of To indicate a property
to To indicate the owner or belongings
with To indicate quality or feature

Examples:
I. It is the house of her.
II. Islamabad is the capital of Pakistan.
III. Amna is a friend of mine.
IV. This watch belongs to my late grandfather.
V. That pen belongs to him.
VI. I saw a boy with brown eyes.
VII. He saw a woman with a diamond ring.

Some Rules of Preposition

1. A Preposition has an object.


Example:
o The bus went through the tunnel.

2. A Preposition comes before a noun or pronoun.


Example:
o Ali is working with Amna.

3. A Preposition never comes before a verb.


Example:
o He forgot to bring his pen.
