Sketches What is it?
• A sketch is a quickly executed freehand drawing that is
not intended as a finished work.
• In general, sketching is a quick way to record an idea for
later use.

Sketches Product Design Sketch
• Products like mobile phone, CD players, airplanes, ships,
etc. began as an "idea" in someone’s mind.
• They had to be drawn on paper before these "ideas"
became products.
• These "drawings“ shows what the "ideas" looked like
from different angles.

Sketches Technical Drawing
• Technical drawing, also known as drafting or
draughting.
• It is the act and discipline of composing plans that
visually communicate how something functions or has
to be constructed.
• Drafting is the visual language of industry and
engineering.
• A drafter, draftsperson, or draughtsman is a person
who makes a drawing (technical or otherwise).
• A professional drafter who makes technical drawings is
sometimes called a drafting technician.

Sketches Standard Drawing Scale
Recommended scale for metric drawing are:
• Full Size 1:1
• Enlargement 2 : 1 (Twice as large)
• Reduction 1 : 2 (Half of original size)

Workpiece length Length on drawing

S=1:1 S=2: 1 S = 5 : 1 S = 1 : 2.5
10 20 50 4
7 14 35 2.8
25 50 120 10
105 210 525 42

Sketches Technical Lettering
Characteristics of Standard lettering:
• Easy to read

• Uniform

• The lettering may be vertical or sloping less than 15

degree to the right (italic).

• Preferred is the Vertical Lettering.

• Nominal heights in mm for the lettering:

2.5, 3.5, 5, 7, 10, 14 and 20.
