CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

Rationale
Cyberbullying differs from regular bullying in that it employs technology to

do harm others, Cyberbullying, also known as online cruelty, ids define as bullying

that occurs via email, instant messaging, a chatroom, a website, or digital messages

or photos delivered to a cellphone.

Cyberbullying involves the use of information and communication

technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual

or group that is intended to harm others. Cyberbullies do not have to own their

actions due to the anonymity and cyberbullying is often outside of the legal reach

of schools and school board since it often happens outside of the school (Belsey,

2004)

According to Watts et al (2017) the 7 types of cyberbullying: flaming, online

harassment, cyberstalking, denigration, masquerading, trickery and outing, and

exclusion. It is more likely to go undetected to parents and administrators than

other forms of bullying. This is due to victims’ feelings that they needed to learn

how to deal with it on their own, as well as their fear that if they told their parents,

their internet privileges would be revoked.

Cyberbullying is a serious issue that affects both adults and teenagers.

Students who use electronic devices more frequently are more likely to be bullied,

which has a negative impact on their health. Interest in cyberbullying is unlikely to

wane in the coming years. As a result, this research will assist those who have been

cyberbullied in overcoming their bullying experiences. This will aid future

researchers in compiling the factors that have a significant impact on

cyberbullying.

Students in the town of Naval, in particular, are more likely to use their

mobile phones, laptops, and personal computers to study and have their classes as a

result of flexible learning. However, cyberbullying occurs during that period

without the knowledge of the parents or guardians. As a result, this study will be

undertaken in order to discover the student’s personal perspective and to assist

cyberbullying situations that have been brought by the social media in the town of

Naval.

Theoretical Background

Watts et al (2017) describes the 7 types of cyberbullying flaming, online

harassment, cyberbullying, denigration, masquerading, trickery and outing and

exclusion. In support to the study Beale (2001), victims involved in bullying will
suffer several effects mentally such as increasing of oppression, loneliness,

feelings of self-esteem and feelings of tendency towards suicide. This will lead to

an increase in self-injuring cases. It can be explained that the occurrence of

bullying causes the victim to be inferior, shy and sad because of the negative

treatment that makes them feel uncomfortable in doing something, overly sensitive

and so on other psychological effects such as feeling angry, disappointed, stressed,

disturbed, embarrassed and different to trust others will also be suffered by the

victim.

The Problem
Statement of the Problem
The overall objective of this study was to ascertain the indicators and

experiences of the selected students from the Biliran Province State University

towards cyberbullying. This result is used to determine the possible solution to

cyberbullying. Specifically, this sought to;

1. Determine the profile of the respondents in terms of;

1.1 Age;

1.2 Sex

1.3 Family Background

1.3.1. Parents Education

1.3.2. Parents Occupation

1.3.3. Number Household Member

1.3.4. Family Income

2. Determine the types of cyberbullying experienced

3. Determine the effects to the students by cyberbullying

4. Develop a plan of action to be done to addressed cyberbullying incidence

Significance of the Study

This study is significant to the following;

Administrators. This study will give an idea on how they will protect the

students and conduct programs that will avoid the students in

engaging into cyberbullying cases.

Instructors. Enable them to reach out for the students that were

academically destructed and help them to find remedy to the

cyberbullying experiences of the students.

Students. Helps them overcome the possible cyberbullying experiences

they might encounter. This study will seek information that will

be the solution to aid cyberbullying cases they’ve might

experiences as the flexible learning was still ongoing due to the

pandemic.

Future Researchers. Enable them to easily gathered data and serves them as a

guide in conducting cyberbullying topic in their research paper.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Design

This part presents the methods used by researcher;

Research Design

Quantitative research design was utilized in this study as this is appropriate

and relevant on the variables and objectives of the study which seek the profile of

the respondents, types of cyberbullying experienced, as well as the effects to the

students of cyberbullying.

Research Environment

This study is to be conducted in Biliran Province State University (Main

Campus), Naval Biliran whom cyberbullying is commonly found.

Research Respondents

The participants of this study were 100 students randomly selected from

different programs in the Biliran Province State University.

Research Instrument

This study utilized semi-constructed survey questionnaire. The questionnaire

is divided into two parts. Part I, contained the profile of the respondents in terms of
age, sex, and family background. Part II, contained the types of bullying

experienced, assessment of the experienced of the students.

Research Procedure

Data Collection

The researcher sought permission to proper authorities to conduct the

study; then a letter asking for help and support addressed to the respondents was

formulated. Thereafter, the researchers administered online or distributed, retrieve,

tabulation and analysis of data.

Data Analysis

As to their experiences, this is measured through the following data

scoring:

Range Description

4.20-5.00 Always

3.40-4.19 Often

2.60-3.39 Sometimes

1.80-2.59 Rarely

1.00-1.79 Never

Ethical Consideration
The researcher ensures that the files of the participants in this study

are kept private. The subjects’ full content was obtained before the study’s

conduct. Furthermore, the study communication was conducted in an honest and

transparent manner for the benefit of the respondents. The misinformation

concerning the research’s goals and objectives was avoided.

Trustworthiness of Research

This survey was designed to look into the respondent’s personal

perspective on cyberbully, thus the information gained is fully reliable. In addition,

the researcher provides documentation that acts as verification of the study’s

validity.
