REPORT [DJJ10022 – MECHANICAL WORKSHOP PRACTICE 1]

INTRODUCTION
Gas welding is the process of joining metals by heating the two parts of
the metal to be joined until they melt and join into one. Oxyacetylene is
the most used method in gas welding due to its high flame temperature.
Gas welding is also one of the branches of welding that has been used in
industry field for a long time.

OBJECTIVE
➢ To know the basic of gas welding workshop.
➢ To know the main function of gas welding.
➢ To know the names of equipment and materials that used in gas
welding.
➢ To know the correct ways and techniques of welding when using gas
welding.
➢ To know the safety precautions that need to be followed in the gas
welding workshop.

EQUIPMENT/MATERIAL
NAME/SKETCH FUNCTION
Welding Helmet -To protect the eyes and face from
exposed to radiation and hot flames
during welding work.

Leather Welding Glove -To protect hands from exposed to hot

flames during welding work.

Oxygen and Acetylene Gas Cylinder -Acetylene gas is used as fuel to produce
the flames.

-Oxygen is used as the ignition aid

that can raise the temperature of the
flames.

Pressure Regulator -To control the pressure of the gas

coming out of the oxygen cylinder and
the acetylene cylinder.

Page 3
REPORT [DJJ10022 – MECHANICAL WORKSHOP PRACTICE 1]

Non-Return Valve -Non-return valves are safety devices to

prevent back feeding of gases. This
valve only allows gas to flow in one
direction only.

Gas Hoses -To transfer oxygen and acetylene gas

from the cylinder to the welding torch

Welding Torch -To adjust the rate of oxygen and

acetylene gas to produce neutral flame,
oxidizing flame or carburizing flame.

Filler Rod -To supply filler metal to the joint.

Page 4
REPORT [DJJ10022 – MECHANICAL WORKSHOP PRACTICE 1]

Wire Brush -Used to clean rusty metal before welding

it and used to clean the surface of metal
that has been welding.

Spark Lighter -Used to produce a spark to ignite the

welding torch

PROCEDURES
PROCEDURES DIAGRAM
-Wear all welding safety equipment as
shown in the diagram

-Prepare a few pieces of metal that has

been cleaned using the wire brush.

-Adjust the oxygen and acetylene gas pressure

to the desired PSI.

-Ignite a flame on the torch using spark

lighter.

Page 6
REPORT [DJJ10022 – MECHANICAL WORKSHOP PRACTICE 1]

-Adjust the flame to get the neutral flame.

-For butt joint, stack the metal plates on

top of the bricks so that the worktable
surface does not melt.

-Tack weld on the corner of the joint so

that it is not moving when welded.
-Point the flame at 45-60 degree to heat
the workpiece.
-When workpiece is already heat, start
move slowly to weld the entire joint.
-Use the filler rod to supply filler metal to
the joint.
-Clean the surface of the welded metal
using the wire brush and get the result.

-For corner joint, tack weld on the corner

of the joint to get 90-degree angle.

-Point the flame at 45-60 degree to heat

the workpiece.
-When workpiece is already heat, start
move slowly to weld the entire joint.
-Use the filler rod to supply filler metal to
the joint.

-Clean the surface of the welded metal

using the wire brush and get the result.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1. Get permission from the lecturer or workshop supervisor before
entering the workshop.
2. Make sure all doors and windows in the workshop are open before
starting welding work.
3. Always follow the rules in the workshop.
4. Always wear safety equipment while doing welding work.
5. Do not play or joke with friends while doing welding work.
6. Do the welding work carefully to prevent accidents from happening.
7. If an accident happened, report it to the lecturer or workshop
supervisor immediately.
8. Make sure the workshop is in a clean and safe condition after finishing
the welding work.

DISCUSSION
1. State type of flame?
-Carburizing Flame
-Neutral Flame
-Oxidizing Flame

2. Why the alignment become error?

-It because of lack of experience and need more practical.

3. How to prevent the alignment become error?

-Constant the slow movement and make a correct handle to the
torch with 60-degree from surface of metal.

CONCLUSION
At the end of this Gas Welding Workshop, I learned the basic of Gas
Welding Workshop and know the main function of gas welding. I also
learned the names of equipment and materials that used in gas welding.
Other than that, I also learned how to do this project and finish the
report. Next, I also learned the correct ways and techniques of welding
when using gas welding. In addition, I learned the importance of safety
precautions and the importance of welding process in the engineering
field.
