Art in Science

This summer at the Natural History Museum, we really want people to understand the building blocks
of life. You will be in charge of creating our newest museum exhibit about macromolecules. Exciting
stuff!
Museum exhibit Criteria:
First, the questions we would like to answer for our museum guests are:
-How are carbon-based molecules essential in supporting and sustaining life?
-How do the specific characteristics of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen enable the formation of larger
complex molecules?
There are 4 carbon-based macromolecules we plan to educate our guests on:
-Carbohydrates
-Lipids
-Nucleic Acids
-Proteins
For your assigned macromolecules, you must provide:
-An artifact that is a two-dimensional or three-dimensional model depicting the macromolecule
-A label with 1-2 sentences explaining what the artifact is and how it is related to that macromolecule
-1 paragraph discusses how that molecule is related to the formation of larger more complex
molecules and how the molecule is essential in supporting and sustaining life
Your exhibit must be:
-Visually appealing to guests
-Organized and neat

Grading Rubric:
Learning Target: (HS-LS1-6) I can construct and revise an explanation based on evidence for how carbon, hydrogen, and
oxygen can form new carbon-based molecules, and how these macromolecules are necessary for life.
