CHAPTER 5: COMMUNITY DANCE PARTICIPATION FOR HEALTH HABITS

 The learner demonstrates understanding of dance in optimizing one’s health; as requisite for physical activity
assessment performance, and as a career opportunity.

 What kind of genres in dancing do you love the most? Why? (Explain it with two or three sentences)

COMMUNITY DANCE
Community dance is about dancing either professionally or recreationally with people. What makes the community
dance distinct from the other kind of dance activity is determined by:

- The context in which it takes place (where, with whom why)


- Approaches to dance practice that are informed by a set of beliefs and philosophies (health awareness, wellness, etc)
- The values that it embodies and promotes (quitting sedentary lifestyle)

Community dancing for all – Community dance creates a good access for people to quality experiences in dance irrespective
of where they live, their age, sexuality, gender, race, educational attainment, disability or economic status. Participants are not
forced to be in the professional skill level in dancing but encouraged to practice dancing as healthy habits in achieving optimal
health. One study by Butler (2016) reported that community dancing helps people who were affected by cancer to regain sense
of courage and motivation to continue in spite of struggles.

Community dancing happens anywhere and everywhere – community dancing is widely known for its concept that doesn’t
require specific setting as long as it can accommodate great numbers of participants who are interested to join.

Community dance gives new ideas of dancing – Community dancing is not a specific type of dance that has strict patterns to
be followed but it allows people to create new forms and ideas of dancing. It is more of learning, watching, interacting,
performing and talking through dancing.

Community dancing is led by professionals – these are the fitness and health professionals who are certified to work in a
community through dancing.

COMMUNITY DANCING AND ITS HEALTH BENEFITS


As discussed in Chapter 3, dancing is a great strategy in coping up with stress which it helps the body reduce its
tensions stored up in the muscles. However, staying active not just physically but in social, intellectual and creative ways, has
become a key element in helping people to maintain optimal health condition. Aside from the obvious physical benefits of
dancing, it also fosters more social interaction and camaraderie than group exercises classes (boot camp, Pilates, HIIT) where
instructions were simply followed, because of the need to work together interactively to create and remember patterns that
would synchronize with others. Participation in community or partnered dancing can improve fitness, cognitive functioning,
social functioning, mood, self-confidence, and these perceived benefits may increase as participation becomes more frequent
over time (Lakes et. Al., 2016).
Community dancing can be a unique strategy for social exercises that can offer a capacity to enjoy human touch in a
safe, monitored environment. In community dancing, there are no such strict targets and no failures.

Community Dance can:


 Introduce dance as an art form of activity to professional and non-professional populations.
 Impact positively on people’s health and wellness, motivation and social relationships.

 Enhances the quality relationships within the community and peers.
 Make a positive contribution to wider social connections and change.

COMMUNITY DANCE PROMOTIONS

Schools-based
The Department of health (DOH) holds a nationwide program for health awareness named “Wellness Campus National
Dance Contest” wherein schools are invited to join. The program aims to continue the development of the wellness lifestyle
among high school students through habit formation. It provided a venue for students to showcase their talents in dancing and
gain their self-confidence in the process through exposure.

Community-based
There are certain barangays holding community dance activity such ballroom (i.e Quezon Memorial Circle) and Zumba
as today’s popular dance, which are funded by the government officials as part of the health and wellness programs in local
areas. Dancing becomes more accessible especially to older adults since it is held in nearby locations such as amusement parks,
covered courts plazas, and even in churches with involvement of some youth ministries.

Workplace-based
Work holds potential stressors for an individual. By dancing, sheer delight, adrenaline and interactivity can be brought
to workers in corporate. In New Delhi, corporations include dance as part of the employees’ wellness development program. It
is said that dance can be used in numbers of ways to help companies achieve employee retention, camaraderie, unity and
cohesiveness, productivity and cooperation.

Community dance practice that embodies these values is about:


 People enjoying dance as expression of themselves and their life experiences in a creative form, learning new
information and skills, and connecting to each other, their communities and respective cultures.
 Sense of achievement
 Broad understanding about dance
 Providing opportunities to explore the art of dance and to have critical engagement with their own dance and the dance
of others: asking artistic questions, seeking solutions and reflecting on their dance experiences
 Offering opportunities to gain new skills and insights: learning about dance, in dance and through dance
 Placing people, their aspirations, rights and choices at its heart: recognizing the individuality of participants and
working with them in ways that support them to find their own dance ‘voice’
 Creating a ‘safe’ space where individuals can fulfil their human and creative potential, where they feel positive about
themselves and are respected and valued by others, enabling them to grow, develop and build positive and active
relationships within their wider communities.

This activity will serve as your practice for your summative test.

Direction: Create a 3-5 minutes dance routine inspired by popular dance craze and you will submit it via messenger in my
account.
The final performance will be submitted before or during our summative test schedule. Deadline of Submission will be on
October 16, 2021 at 12:00NN.
