Module I: The Nature and

Relationships of Science,
Technology and Society

Lesson 1: The Relationship Between

Science and Technology

Introduction

It has been a common knowledge that technology is “applied” science which

makes the two related to each other. Interestingly, it is more than just that,
meaning the relationship between science and technology shows the mutuality or
interdependence between them, just like a husband is to a wife and vice versa.
From a different perspective, the history would tell that the two concepts developed
separately and later became related in some aspects which have been beneficial to
the society until at present times. So, how did science start? How about technology?
How did they become related to each other? This lesson will investigate how science
and technology became related and will explain why these relations are important.

Objectives

1. Define science and technology;

2. Trace the development of science and technology; and
3. Illustrate the relationship of science and technology by highlighting its role in
the society.

Suggested Learning Time 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours

Let’s Try Answering This!

Fill in the blanks with the term that will make each of the following statements
correct.
1. Scientia (science), philosophia (philosophy) and _______________ were used
to cover all knowledge.
2. _______________ pertains to the knowledge of facts.

Learning Plan

Activity
Materials: a copy of the reading material entitled “Science and Technology: What
They Are and Why Their Relations Matter” (see the link in our syllabus to get the
copy), reciprocal teaching worksheet, dictionary
Procedure:
In this activity, you will employ reading strategies of reciprocal teaching
approach which is proven effective in active reading. A copy of the worksheet is
provided in the last page. After accomplishing the worksheet, answer the questions
in the analysis.
Analysis
1. How will you compare the meaning of science in the past and at present?

2. How technology was perceived in the past and at present?

3. How science and technology became related?

4. Cite instances that show how science and technology are related.

5. Based on the relationship between science and technology, why do you

think their relations matter?

Abstraction
Write a summary of what you have learned from the activity and analysis parts of
this lesson.

Application
Illustrate the relationship of science and technology by highlighting its role in
the society specifically in addressing the pandemic COVID-19 using a graphic
organizer (to be included in your Student e-portfolio).
Go to this link where you can create your graphic organizer:
https://bubbl.us/

The following suggested topics and links will help you in developing ideas on
how you will create your graphic organizer.
