 TO STUDY COMBINATION OF RESISTORS IN PARALLEL CIRCUIT

VOLTAGE = 5 V
R1 = 1000 OHMS
R2 =180 OHMS
R3 =100 OHMS

Combination of three resistors in parallel:

First Diagram:

Current = I 1 + I 2 + I 3

The potential difference applied to R1 = V = I1 R1

The potential difference across R2 = V = I2 R2
The potential difference across R3 = V = I3 R3
Thus I = I1 + I2 + I3
= V/ R1 + V/ R2 +V/ R3
=V (1/ R1 +1/ R2 +1/ R3)

If this parallel combination is replaced by an equivalent resistance, Req

Then I = V/ Req
1/ Req = 1/ R1 +1/ R2 +1/ R3

The total resistance,

1/ R = 1/ R1 +1/ R2 +1/ R3 =1/ 1000 + 1/180 +1/ 100 = 14 =9/9000. So R = 60Ω
The voltage across each resistor is 5v. Now to find the current across each branch,
the formula is I = V / R.

I1 = 5/1000 =0.005A

I2 = 5/180 = 0.02A
I3 = 5/100 = 0.05A

Total current I = 0.005 + 0.02+ 0.05 = 0.075A
