Homework 2

Bad Design Improvement

1. Take pictures of at least 3 objects in your house or neighborhood with bad design.

2. Point out what are the problems in the design.

3. Explain how to improve the design based on the lessons on Visual, Auditory, and Cognition

modules.

1. Electric Fan
Yasaningrat 2

• Design Problem

In this fan picture, the fan has no cover. This can cause the fan blades to be exposed
to objects from the outside and can be dangerous for objects that are hit by the
propellers. In addition, the joints of this fan look not strong and sturdy, so the fan cannot
stand upright.
• Design Improvement

Some suggestions can improve the design of the fan. The fan needs to have a strong
propeller cover so that the propeller is not exposed to external objects and keeps the
propeller in good condition. Besides being strong, the cover also needs to be
disassembled so that the inside and the fan blades can be cleaned regularly. Besides the
cover, this fan requires strong joints to keep the fan standing firmly and not easily
falling so that the fan can function properly.

2. Kitchen Pot

• Design Problem
In this kitchen pot, there is no adequate handle to lift this pot while cooking. This
causes pot users to not be able to move the pot properly after cooking
• Design Improvement

There are some improvement suggestions for the design of the pot. The first is the
installation of a strong and heat-resistant handle so that the pot handle can last a long

time and is not easily damaged by heat and other factors. In addition, it would be better
if the handle of this pan is coated with an insulating material to protect the hands from
excessive heat for human skin. In addition to the material, the shape of the handle also
needs to be adjusted to human ergonomics such as the appropriate size and shape of
the handle so that it is comfortable to hold.

3. Pedestrian Sidewalk

• Design Problem

In this picture, there is a pedestrian sidewalk on Jalan Raya Pasar Minggu, West
Pancoran. This sidewalk has quite shady trees and a good road, but this sidewalk does
not have a barrier with adequate gutters. This can be dangerous for unfocused road
users, especially young children.
• Design Improvement

For the design improvement of the sidewalk, the designer can make a barrier on the
sidewalk. The installed barrier needs to be designed properly so that the barrier can
limit the sidewalk with the adjacent ditch, so that sidewalk users can be safer to use the

sidewalk, especially for children under five who still do not understand road safety. In
addition to a good design, the barrier to be made needs to use a sturdy material so that
the barrier does not collapse easily. The color on the barrier also needs to be made
easily visible at night so that road users know when it is dark that there is a barrier on
the sidewalk.

Conclusion

From all the designs, it can be concluded that the design needed to be ergonomic
and good must be in accordance with human needs for the object. When the designer has
known the needs and how the ergonomics of the goods with the user, the designer can make
the object design better and user friendly. Therefore, it is necessary to use a good concept
and shape of the object to meet user satisfaction of the object.
