1
INTRODUCTION ON MUNG BEANS
Mung bean also known as green gram or locally as choroko is a self-pollinated crop belonging to the family
Fabaceae.
Its production in Uganda is still low, estimated at less than 300 kg/ha due to a number of constraints such as
low yielding varieties, disease and insect pest problems, variable climatic and soil conditions.
Green gram is one of the important legume crops in eastern and northern Uganda mainly for food and income.
My project was located near the orchard and it dealt in the production of green gram.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT.

 To provide narogram seeds at affordable prices.

 To produce disease free and tolerant varieties
 To reduce food insecurity and malnutrition.
 To carryout research on the new varieties of green gram like narogram 2.
 Producing quality products and services.
 Protect students and farmers from parasitic middlemen.

IMPACT TO THE INDIVIDUAL AND COMMUNITY

Production of NAROGRAM 2 seeds was aimed at increasing accessibility of these seeds to local
farmers.
 The project provided employment to the local people like the ones that carried out weeding
and planting.
 Providing seeds at relatively fair prices.
 The project exposed me to challenges and how to overcome the like the too much rains, pests
and diseases.
 The project improved on my research and knowledge.
 Hard work and achieving greater out puts were the main targets.
 Improving business skills and boosting my morale towards business.
 The business has reduced the rate of malnutrition in the community.
 Entrepreneurship skills have been improved to me as the individual and the community at large.
 Provision of disease free and tolerant seeds.
 Sensitization of the community about agronomic practises involved in green pepper
production.

2
CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED WHEN OPERATING THE PROJECT.

During the implementation of my business project I faced number of challenges and they include
 The project implementation was presented to the class late and I had limited time which
made the project to run past the expected time.
 Most of the activities were contradicting with class work for example weeding, gap filling
,monitoring.
 I faced a challenge of rain since my plot was located in a swampy area and this made my
crop wilt and dieying.
 The problem of shifting my project that made me be late in my activities thus my objectives
were affected.
 Pests and diseases that were due to the high rain fall and PH thus affecting my production.
 The high cost of seeds where a kilogram was five thousand shillings.
 The cost of ploughing and planting was high and thus needed much sums of money.

HOW CHALLENGES WERE OVERCAME

 Relocating of my project to overcome the problem of floods.

 Pests and diseases were overcame by spraying using pesticides like rocket .
 To prevent the project from affecting my class work, I employed some villagers at
cheaper prices.
 The problem of high costs of ploughing was over came by hiring the tractor in groups.

LESSONS LEARNT

 I learnt about various challenges like those facing small businesses.

 I learnt how to control pests and diseases in the field.
 I learnt how to plant and manage green gram like spacing and other agronomic
practices.
 I was able to learn how to select personal carriers in life.

FUTURE PLANS

 Producing high quality green gram and increase its market base.
 To widen the capital base of green gram farmers in soroti.
 To increase the production of green gram in Arapai and soroti.

3
 Improve on the control measures of pests and disease control.
