Lesson 4.2 Measures of Central Tendency For Grouped Data Mean For Grouped Data
One of the method that can be used to find the mean of grouped data is
the class mark or midpoint method. In this method, the class mark of each
interval has to be known and it will be multiplied to the corresponding
frequency of every class interval. The formula for the mean using this method
is:
Example:
Consider the frequency distribution below:
Solution:
First, get the midpoint or class mark of each class interval. Next,
multiply the frequency of each class to the corresponding
midpoint or class mark. Then, get the sum of the products.
Steps:
1. Compute for the <CF of the data.
𝑛
2. Determine the median class by computing for the value of 2 .
𝑛
3. Locate the computed value for 2 at the <CF column (must be within one
of the <CF). The interval corresponding to this <CF value is the
median class.
4. Look at the <CF corresponding to the median class. Then get the <CF
before/above the median class.
5. To determine the value of i, subtract the lower limit from the upper
limit in median class (or any of the class interval) then add 1.
6. To determine the value l, just subtract the lower limit of the median
class by 0.5.
7. To determine the value of f, locate the frequency of the median class.
8. After you get all the values in the formula, use it in the formula to get
the median.
Example:
Consider the frequency distribution below:
𝑛

c. Locate the computed value for 2 at the <CF column (must be within
one of the <CF). The interval corresponding to this <CF value is the
median class.

d. Look at the <CF corresponding to the median class. Then get the <CF
before/above the median class.
o The <CF (<CF before/above the median class is 28.
e. Determine the value of i, subtract the lower limit from the upper
limit in median class (or any of the class interval) then add 1.
o In the class interval column, the lower limit of the median
class is 108 and the upper limit 116. Therefore, i = 116-108

f. Determine the value l, just subtract the lower limit of the median
class by 0.5.
o The lower limit in the class interval column of the median
class is 108, to find the l, subtract 108 by 0.5. 108 – 0.5 =
107.5

𝑀𝑜 = 3(𝑚𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛) − 2(𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛)
Example:
Using the same example of frequency distribution table above, we can
now find the mode of the data since that we found the mean and the
median.
𝑀𝑜 = 3(𝑚𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛) − 2(𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛)
𝑀𝑜 = 3(112.45) − 2(112.54)
𝑀𝑜 = 337.35 − 225.08
