Lao-e 11-TAN LESSON 2 C2

Solve the following problems:

1. The mean score of a random sample of 35 grade 11 students who took the first periodic test is
calculated to be 86. The population variance is known to be 0.10.
a. Find the 95% confidence interval for the mean of the entire grade 11 students.
b. Find the lower and upper confidence limits.

α
Step 1: find the value of Z
2

Given:

X=86

σ 2=0.10

n=35

Confidence level is 95%

(1- ∝)100%=95%
(1- ∝)1=0.95
(1- ∝)=0.95

∝=0.05

α
=0.025
2

α
- Use the areas under the normal curve table (0.4750 from the z-table 1.96) Z =1.96
2
- 0.5-0.025 = 0.4750

Step 2: find the margin of error:

σ =√ σ 2

=√ 0.10

=0.31622776601 or 0.32

α σ
E= z
2 √n

=1.96¿)
=0.106016

Step 3: substitute the values of x́ and E in the confidence interval x́ – E< μ< x́ + E .

x́−E< μ< x́+ E

86−0.106016< μ< 86+0.106016=85.893984 μ 86.106016

85.89< μ< 86.11

Lower confidence limit=85.89, upper confidence limit=86.11

2. The mean and standard deviation of the scores of a random sample of 45 grade 10 students who
took the final test are calculated to be 76 and 12, 5, respectively.
a. Find the 95% confidence interval for the mean of the entire grade 10 students.
b. Find the lower and upper confidence limits.

α
Step 1: find the value of z
2

Given:

X=76

σ =12.5

n=45

Confidence level is 95%

(2- ∝)100%=95%
(1- ∝)1=0.95
(2- ∝)=0.95

∝=0.05

α
=0.025
2

α
- Use the areas under the normal curve table. (0.4750 from the z-table is 1.96) z =1.96
2
- 0.5-0.025=0.4750

Step 2: find the margin error:

σ =12.5
α σ
E= z
2 √n

12.5
=1.96 (
√ 45
=3.65224

Step 3: substitute the values of x́ and E in the confidence interval x́−E< μ< x́+ E

x́−E< μ< x́+ E

76−3.65224< μ<76+ 3.65224=72.34776< μ<79.65224

Lower confidence limit=72.25, upper confidence limit=79.65

Mini task 2

1. You have learned the importance of the mean and the standard deviation. You have also
learned how to compute these values. Think about your answers to the following questions.
Then discuss your ideas.
- There are 3 measures of central tendency: mean median and mode. Which of this is the most
stable? Why?
 For me, mean is the most stable in the 3 measures of central tendency because mean is
always there is any given distribution.
- Illustrate with at least 5 values. Explain your choice in writing/encoding.

∑ of all the valuse
total number of values
 76−3.65224< μ<76+ 3.65224=72.34776< μ<79.65224
(the mean is between the values)
 Lower confidence and upper confidence
(the mean is the value)
 Used to decide between two options
(the mean is between 2 values like the second example)
 Most common thing to solve for
2. You have learned about estimation of parameters and compute real-life problems about it.
Discuss your ideas with these following questions.
- Why do we need to estimate parameters and what is the importance of this in your life?
 We need to estimate parameters because it is not visible to measure an entire population
that is why we need to estimate. For example: sample population is taken to obtain the
parameter estimates. And it is important in my life because estimation is applied every day.
Just like in money, I estimate my daily expenses for me to earn.
