SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Ionizing Radiation Exposure: When power is applied, this equipment may generate ionizing radiation. Take
precautions that no part of the body passes through the x-ray beam when the equipment is energized.
Avoid scatter radiation during warm-up and testing by maintaining a safe distance from the x-ray beam.
See the Safety and Specification manual for equipment appropriate distance and other precautions
regarding ionizing radiation. All operators must be properly trained regarding ionizing radiation and take
adequate steps to protect against injury.

Electric Shock: This equipment contains high voltages. When the tabletop/panels/ shrouds are removed,
visually confirm that power cord is unplugged and remains unplugged until power is required to complete
the procedure. When servicing while energized, take precautions to prevent electric shock.

Moving Parts and Pinch Points: Avoid moving parts and pinch points (e.g. belt/pulley, arm/back rail, green
wheels/rail).

Sharp Edges: Take precautions to prevent injury from contact with component edges (e.g. OMI/OMD wheel,
arm slot cover).

Hot Surfaces: Keep hands clear or allow components to cool before servicing. (e.g. stepper motors, hard
drives, power supplies and microprocessors).

Heavy Lifting: Obtain help lifting or moving any object weighing over EHS limits. Ask for assistance when
maneuvering awkward objects (e.g. tabletop).
Laser Radiation: Do not stare into the laser beam at any time. The reflection from the tabletop or
shutter/collimator assembly is sufficient to determine if the laser is on.

E. Lift the tri-wall cardboard top off of the scanner-shipping skid.

F. Unlock the end panels and remove them by hinging them down and sliding them toward
the rear of the scanner.

Note: all panels are grounded with green/yellow wires with protective earth labels (P/N 17231) near
the connection points. Be sure to carefully disconnect these when panels are removed and for safety
reasons, it is imperative that these connections be re-established when the panels are re-attached.
Each connection should have its own protective earth label and should only be made with a
green/yellow cable. If this is not the case, notify the GE-LUNAR Customer Support Department

E. Remove tabletop (eight #10-32 screws from the underside, or from the upper rim
channel on the scanner frame).

F. Remove the back panel (four 1/4-28 screws and five #10-32 screws) from the table
assembly.

G. Unlock both ends of the front door and carefully swing it down.

H. Refurbished/Moved Compact or Full: Remove the upper front rail by removing the 3 to
5 Phillips head screws.

I. Refurbished/Moved Compact or Full: Remove the front panel and disconnect the panel
ground by removing the two nuts on the bolts holding it to the front legs and lift it
upward and off.

J. New Full: Remove the front panel by removing the 3 to 5 Phillips head screws and
disconnect the panel ground by removing the two nuts on the bolts holding it to the front
legs and lift it upward and off.

K. The scanner frame is mounted to 4 wood blocks, two in front and two in the back.
Remove the four bolts holding the scanner frame to the support blocks.

L. Lift the scan table off of the shipping pallet using a minimum of two people.

Note: The scanner is very heavy and will be damaged if it is not lifted off of the palate.

3. MOUNTING THE SCAN ARM

A. Remove the two screws holding the L-shaped bracket on the high voltage cable trough
to the front longitudinal carriage. The High voltage cable trough may be wire tied to the
transverse extrusion to keep it up and out of the way when the arm is hung.

B. Remove the front longitudinal carriage (three flathead screws) from the arm.

Note: there may be shims behind the front longitudinal carriage – be careful not to loose them.

C. Slide the rollers on the front longitudinal carriage onto the front longitudinal track located
on the frame assembly. Keep the carriage as far as possible towards the head end of the
table assembly.

D. Gently pull the Longitudinal Drive Cable up and out of the way at the head end of the
scanner, being careful not to stress the cable – pull it only as far as is required.

E. If you wish to have an extra hand hold, remove the arm's back cover panel by removing
the Phillips head machine screws.

F. Clip the wire-tie that is holding the tube head / carriage (note tube head is on the arm for
NT-B OR NEWER systems) to the back of the arm.

G. Remove the two lower adjustable wheels from the rear longitudinal carriage plate using
2-7/16” wrenches.

H. For NT-B OR NEWER and MD+ systems with the tube head on the arm – place a wire tie
around the extrusion on both sides of the tube head to hold the tube head in place in the
center of the extrusion.

I. At the head end of the table where the cutout in the rear trough is, hold the arm upright
and position the arm's lower transverse extrusion through the back of the table.

J. Lift the arm and hang the four wheels of the rear longitudinal carriage onto the upper
longitudinal extrusion (this is easier if you tilt the front of the arm slightly downward).

Note: Be careful not to damage longitudinal and transverse belts or any components on the
electronics pan.

Long Column

Short Column

Figure 1: When the arm is to be mounted it should only be allowed to rest on its back as in the
illustration under the number 1 in this figure.

K. Have a helper balance the arm in an upright position while you slide the front
longitudinal carriage into position and attach it with a flat head screw to the end of the
lower transverse extrusion – do not tighten the flat head screw.

L. Then re-attach the two adjustable wheels to the rear carriage and adjust them using two
7/16 wrenches and a 9/16 wrench.

Note: The scan arm on the DPX-NT / MD+ scanner is supported by a series of concentric (stationary)
and eccentric (adjustable) bearing rollers (V wheels). The concentric rollers primarily carry the load of
the arm. The eccentric rollers are used to stabilize and position the arm, and to adjust the free play in
the mounting of the arm.

M. By rotating the adjustable bushing on its mounting bolt, the clearance between the
wheel and the track can be adjusted.

Normal adjustment is obtained by rotating the eccentric bushing with a 9/16-inch wrench, while
holding the bolt that goes through the wheel with two 7/16-inch wrenches.

The 7/16 bolt should be tight, and the adjustable bushing should be tight enough that the wheel
rotates when the arm is moved longitudinally, but it can be turned against the track by hand.

Note: If the bushing is over-tightened it can exert a force greater than the load rating of the longitudinal
drive system, causing the slip clutch to release or the belt to jump teeth.

N. Use the number of shims provided between the extrusion and the front longitudinal
carriage. Insert the shims between the lower extrusion and the bracket, hold them in
place with the flathead screws, do not tighten the screws until the transverse belt is run
onto the pulleys.

Note: The number of shims installed at the factory (if any) is written on a piece of tape that is stuck to the
front longitudinal carriage.

O. Cut the wire tie holding the transverse belt and run it onto the pulleys on the transverse
motor and the pulley on the front longitudinal carriage.

P. Tighten the 3 flathead screws which attach the front longitudinal carriage to the arm’s
lower transverse extrusion.

Q. Re-check the adjustment of the eccentric wheels.

R. Re-attach the back panel (metal lip out) and sure to reconnect the green/yellow ground
wire near the protective earth label (P/N 17231).

S. Install the Arm Slot Cover. See DXAP0010 for detailed instructions.

4. MOUNTING THE TUBE HOUSING ASSEMBLY (NT-A SYSTEMS ONLY)

The x-ray tube housing assembly is shipped upside down in a shipping bracket in the scanner on NT-A
systems – NT-B OR NEWER and MD+ are shipped with the tube head pre-aligned on the arm.

A. If the scanner is an NT-B OR NEWER or an MD+ Proceed to section 5.

B. NT-A ONLY Clip the wire tie holding the longitudinal cable track to the frame.

C. NT-A ONLY Unbolt the tube housing assembly from the tube housing assembly-shipping
bracket. It is held in place by 3 nuts.

Figure 2: NT-A Tube housing assembly mounted in transit

bracket, the arrows indicate the direction of rotation to correctly
orient it for installation.

D. NT-A only: Turn the tube housing assembly toward the foot end of the scanner (arrow 1,
Figure 2) so that the mounting studs point toward the foot end of the scanner, then
holding the tube housing assembly by the sides flip the tube housing assembly over
(arrow 2, Figure 2) without rotating the tube housing assembly.

Tip: If you leave the series of concave washers (Belleville washers) on the single stud they can serve
as a guide for tipping the tube housing assembly into place correctly, if the washers fall off the stud,
the tube has been tipped the wrong way.

Bellville washers are in place and put the nut back on the top stud to hold the tube
housing assembly in place.

F. NT-A only: Replace the other two nuts on the two lower tube housing assembly
mounting studs on the tube housing assembly tilt bar.

G. NT-A only: Remove the shipping bracket from the pan (four bolts) and reattach it to the
pan, with one bolt, laying it down flat.

H. NT-A only Place the other 3 bolts for the mounting bracket in the front rail. This is done
for transporting the Tube housing assembly in the future should the scanner be moved.

5. REMOVE CASTERS
A. Move the scan table to its final position in the room, with six to eight inches between the
wall (2 to 3 inches minimum) and the back of the arm.

B. Install the scanner AC power cord by inserting the cord through the hole in the scanner
near the AC entrance and using the screws provided to mount the strain relief plate.

C. Run the power cord out from under the scanner to the outlet to be used, but do not plug

Y. Anchor the tube housing assembly cables to the high voltage cable trough. There are four tie
down locations toward the rear of the trough panel.

Z. The tube housing assembly cables should be tied down first in such away as to create an arch in
the cable as it leaves the cable track. This is to allow some slack in the cable when the arm
moves to the foot end of the table.

AA. Tie the OMI/OMD cable on the head end of the high voltage cable trough using the two tie
downs and tying to the four wire ties, securing the tube housing assembly bundle.

BB. Tie the OMI/OMD cable to the tube housing assembly bundle an additional time near the
bulkhead. Tie to High Voltage bundle, also between trough and bulkhead.

Note: Secure all cables such that they do not contact the transverse motor (it gets quite hot).

CC. Assure that all cables and bundles lie neatly, do not bend sharply, and are securely in place.
Wire ties should be placed where provision is made (anchors mounted to frame); wire ties should
also be used to neatly bundle wires.

Note: DO NOT over tighten the wire ties.

DD. Move the scan arm to the foot of the scan table. Mount the lower Longitudinal drive cable to the
front transverse carriage through the access hole on the upper rail of the scanner frame.

Note: Make sure the extrusion that carries the source is perpendicular to the front longitudinal rail.

7. AC ENTRANCE / ELECTRICAL INSPECTION

A. Re-check all electrical connections made.

B. Check for binding as the arm is moved to the extreme corners of the table.

C. Check to see that a dedicated circuit is available for the scanner. A 20 Amp circuit (for 100-
127VAC) or a 10A circuit (for 200-240 VAC) is recommended.

D. NT-A Only: Check the AC voltage at the outlet using a voltmeter.
