FUNCTIONS IN THE REAL WORLD

DIRECTIONS: This Learning Activity Sheet focuses on Functions. Read the instructions carefully
and answer the questions that follow.

PART A: Representing real-life situations using functions.

Below are six real-life situations. Carefully analyze each situation.

Situation A: Water evaporation Situation D: Land

Each month, the pond loses the same amount of The width of a land is twice its length. A land is
water due to evaporation. measured in terms of square meters.
Let 𝑥 = the number of months that have passed Let 𝑥 = the length of the land in meters
𝑦 = the total amount of water in the pond 𝑦 = the total land measure
after evaporation
Situation B: Delivery Situation E: Van rental
When sending a package, the farther the Workers in a company decided to rent a van
destination, the higher the price that you must instead of commuting going to work. The

kilometer.
Let 𝑥 = the number of passengers
Let 𝑥 = the number of kilometers to the 𝑦 = the rental share of each passenger in
destination pesos
𝑦 = the cost of sending the package in pesos
Situation C: Gas price Situation F: Bacteria
A gas station has a promo in unleaded gasoline. Mitosis is necessary in developing an antibiotic.
The customer will have a discount of P 3.00 per During an experiment, it was noted that the
liter if he/she will buy gas more than 1,000 number of cells in a bacterial culture doubles

𝑥 = the number of hours that have passed
Let 𝑥 = the number of liters of gasoline
𝑦 = the amount of bacteria in the petri dish
𝑦 = the total amount the customer will pay

If the following functions models the situations above, which situation goes with each formula? Write
the letter of the situation that corresponds to the equation.

Situation Situation
2000 45𝑥 𝑖𝑓 45𝑥 ≤ 1000
1. 𝑦 = 4. 𝑦 = {
𝑥 45𝑥 − 3𝑥 𝑖𝑓 45𝑥 > 1000
2. 𝑦 = 100 ∙ 2𝑥 5. 𝑦 = 50 + 7𝑥

3. 𝑦 = 2000 − 128.25𝑥 6. 𝑦 = 𝑥 ∙ 2𝑥

PART B: Evaluating functions.

Answer the following questions using the equations and its corresponding situation in Part A. Show
your solution under each number. If the space provided is not enough, use a separate paper.
1. What is the total amount of water that the pond will lose by evaporation from February 1 to August
31?

2. If the distance from the sender to the destination is 11.7 kilometers, how much will the sender pay
the courier service?

3. The customer filled her car with 39 liters of gasoline. How much will she pay?

5
4. What is the total measure of the land if the length is 23 8 meters?

5. If there are 13 people in the van including the driver, how much will each passenger pay?

6. If the experiment started at 4:09 pm, how many bacteria will there be in the petri dish at 6:39 am?

PART C: Operations on Functions

Given the following functions, fill up the table by performing the indicated operations. Show your
solution on a separate sheet of paper.

2000
1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥
3. ℎ(𝑥) = 2000 − 0.32𝑥 5. 𝑚(𝑥) = 5 + 7𝑥 3

2. 𝑔(𝑥) = 100 ∙ 2𝑥 4. 𝑘(𝑥) = √𝑥 2 − 8 6. 𝑝(𝑥) = 2𝑥 2

Answer Answer

𝑝(𝑥)∙ℎ(𝑥)
1. f(x) + g(x) 5. 𝑓(𝑥)

2. h(x) – m(x) + p(x) 6. 𝑔 ∘ 𝑓

𝑓(𝑥)
3. 𝑘(𝑥) 7. 𝑘 ∘ 𝑝

4. 𝑚(𝑥) ∙ ℎ(𝑥) 8. ℎ ∘ 𝑘 ∘ 𝑚

PART D: Solving problems involving functions.

Given the situations and equations in Part A, solve the following problems. Show your complete
solution. If the space provided is not enough, use a separate paper.
1. Apart from evaporation, another cause of water loss in the pond is seepage (water that is lost
through the bottom of the pond, through the dikes by infiltration and the drainage system of the
pond). If the volume of the pond remains to be 2,000 m 3 and water loss due to evaporation
remains to be 128.25 m3 per month, answer the following if the seepage loss is 21 m 3 per day:
a. What is the equation that will best represent this problem?

b. What is the total amount of water that will remain in the pond after the whole month of January
2021 has passed?

2. Apart from the basic charge of P 50.00 and P 7.00 per kilometer, the courier service also charges
an additional P 80.00 during afterhours (10 pm to 6 am) and waiting time charge of P 60.00 per
hour which is applicable 30 minutes after pickup or delivery time. How much will you pay the
courier service if he will deliver fireworks from your home to Kilometer Zero in Luneta on February
11, 2021 at 10:30 pm but he must wait until it will be lighted at 12 midnight?

3. a. How much will you pay if the length of the land in Albay is 25 meters and each square meter
costs P 12,000.00?

b. How much will you pay if the width of the land in Quezon City is 25 meters and each square
meter costs P 49,800.00?

c. Which land is bigger?

d. If you have enough money to buy one of the lands, which will you choose? Why?

4. Given that the van rental is P 2,000.00 per day and the gasoline that will be filled in the tank is 42
liters every week except on the third week where they only filled the van with 21 liters of gasoline
that costs P 45.00 per liter. How much will each of the 15 passengers (not including the driver)
share in a month? (Consider that there are 4 weeks in a month and the passengers will travel 5
days a week).
