REACTION PAPER/ REFLECTIVE ACTIVITY

Machinery in the ships are all important as it needed for these equipment’s should be in the
right place. All of these equipment’s is necessary to ensure the propulsion on the ship. Some of
the equipment that being use onboard is the pumps where we already know that these little
machine have a big role in the entire machinery because it has different uses depending on its
different type.

As all we know that ships consists of various types of fluids_-either maybe an oil, water ,
and other materials moving inside different machinery and systems for the purpose of cooling,
heating, lubrication, and as fuels. These liquids are circulated by different types of pumps, as
what I have said in which can be independently driven by ship power supply or attached to the
machinery itself. All the systems on board ship require proper operational and compatible pump
and pumping system so that ship can run on its voyage smoothly.

So now lets talk about pumps where it is a device that moves fluids, or sometimes slurries,
by mechanical action, typically converted from electrical energy into hydraulic energy and can
be found in all types of applications throughout the entire ship. There are many different types of
pump are being discussed earlier ,but as we focused on a one machinery or pump that is also
have a important machine inside the ship and that is the centrifugal pump. A centrifugal pump is
a mechanical device designed to move a fluid by means of the transfer of rotational energy from
one or more driven rotors, called impellers.

The biggest advantage of centrifugal pumps is because of its simplicity. It doesn’t require
any valves or many moving parts. It makes them easy to produce with many different materials.
It allows them to move at high speed with minimal maintenance. Their output is very steady and
consistent .And most of all, they are very small compared to other types of pumps that create the
same output.

However ,the main disadvantage of this pump is that it uses rotation instead of suction to
move water so it means it has no suction power. It means that it must be put under water or
rimed before it will move water. While most pumps are used for water, centrifugal pumps are
also used for sewage, petroleum and chemicals.

Next is the screw up , this is also known as water screw, and it deals with the high
viscosity liquid such as oil and etc. It is a positive-displacement pump that use one or several
screws to move fluid solids or liquids along the screw axis. It moves fluid by continually
displacing the area that the fluid occupies. The screws are encased inside of a liner, usually made
of some sort of metal. The fluid fits into the screw cavities within this liner and is forced through
the pump and out of the discharge as the screws rotate and inter-mesh.

Screw pumps are becoming increasingly popular in certain industries where standard
centrifugal pumps just aren’t providing the desired flow rates and energy efficiency, or they are
having trouble handling high-viscosity liquids and other materials that tend to hinder
performance capabilities. It is where the screw pumps are way better than centrifugal pumps.

But of course , every pumps has its different uses but it has also disadvantages and
advantages that made these little machinery to equip and how it works either it is screw pumps or
centrifugal pumps .
