MODULAR: A NEW MODE OF LEARNING

I. INTRODUCTION

Every child on this earth has the right for education and this right should not be
taken away from them even in this time of global health crisis. In connection to this, the
Department of Education proposed three modes of learning namely Modular Distance
Learning, Online Distance Learning and Television/Radio-Based Instruction to continue
its legacy in delivering quality education to its main clients which is the learners and to
cater the right of every Filipino child which is to to learn and be educated. Among these
three modes of learning the Zamboanga City Division adapted the Modular Distance
Learning were printed modules prepared and designed by the brilliant teachers and
master teachers under the division. These printed modules are composed of lectures and
activities to be answer by the learners at their own home, this kind of learning set up
was started last school year 2020-2021 when covid pandemics hits the country and this
will continue to adapt until this present school year due to unstable health situation in
the country and in the city.
Modules has been the talk of the town since last school year because it is new to
our table in terms of teaching-learning process. Some say they are fine with it because
of the benefit of being safe at home while learning something but many have raised
their difficult encounters and experiences dealing with the said new mode of learning
like for the instance being bombarded with a lot of written and performance task to be
accomplish in a span of 1-2 weeks only and many more.
Pandemic brought us in a very unusual living set up, it changes our life to what
we are used to and made us the person that we never expect we will be. It also changes
the way we learn, think, and even the way we react but we must always remember that
even in these trying times where everyone of us is affected we should allow ourselves to
grow, to be equip with new knowledge and to upgrade ourselves through learning. Yes,
learning is different this time because of having no face-to-face classes but remember
learning doesn’t only happen inside the four corners of the classroom, it doesn’t happen
only where the presence of the teacher is present in our eyes where he/she is writing
something on the board or talking certain stories relevant to the topic yes, I agree
nothing beats that kind of learning set up but we must also know that learning can
happen anywhere and anytime so do with the use of learning modules if we are just
dedicated to our studies and committed to our goals everything will be smooth and easy.

II. OBSERVATION:

Being a teacher who handle an advisory class for the last school year 2020-2021
I have observed that this new learning set up has advantages and disadvantages to the
parents, students and as well us to the teachers. (See the table below for this answer)
III. REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS:

Based on the observations these are some of the questions I got to form.

1. Does modular learning justify the legacy of the Department of Education in delivering quality
education to the learners?
2. Does modular learning set up effective to the academic progress of the learners?
3. Is there really a learning in modular learning?
4. Does this kind of set up make teacher’s work lighter or worse?
5. Is this kind of learning set up a burden or an advantage to the parents?
6. Does teaching-learning process is relevant in modular learning?
