Adverbs of Frequency
We use some adverbs to describe how frequently we do an activity. These

are called adverbs of frequency and include:

These are also known as Adverbs of INDEFINITE frequency as the exact

frequency is not defined.

The Position of the Adverb in a Sentence An

adverb of frequency goes before a main verb (except with To Be).

They can’t run a marathon

Subject + adverb + main verb

I always remember to do my homework.

He normally gets good marks in exams.

An adverb of frequency goes after the verb To Be.

Subject + to be + adverb

They are never pleased to see me.

She isn't usually bad tempered.

When we use an auxiliary verb (have, will, must, might, could, would, can, etc.), the adverb is
placed between the auxiliary and the main verb. This is also true for to be.

Subject + auxiliary + adverb + main verb

She can sometimes beat me in a race.

I would hardly ever be unkind to someone.

They might never see each other again.

They could occasionally be heard laughing.

We use never with positive, not negative verbs:

• They never say 'thank you'.

Can/Can’t

Can is a modal verb, we used to express ability or to say that something is

possible.

They can’t run a marathon

Can is the same for all subjects. We don't add an 'S' in the third person (like other verbs)

The verb that comes after Can is in the infinitive without to:

• I can speak Spanish. (= it is possible for me to speak Spanish = I have the ability to
speak Spanish)
• He can swim well.
• We can see our neighbor in the garden.
• They can play the guitar.

Negative Questions
To form the negative, we add "not" To from the question we change the
after can to form one word: cannot. position of the subject and the
auxiliary verb.
We can also contract the negative to
form can't. (can't = cannot) The main verb is still in the infinitive
without to.
• I cannot play the piano.
• We can't go to the cinema • Where can I buy an ice-cream? •
tonight. Can I go to the party, please? • Can
• She cannot speak French very you speak Japanese?
well. • What can we do on Saturday?
• He can't drive a car.
Remember that you can use short
answers:

• Can I sit here please? Yes, you

can.
• Can you speak Chinese? No, I
can't.
