PARABOLA QUESTIONS

ANIMATION (Ex- 8.1)

Find the equation of the parabolas satisfying the
following conditions: Focus; S (-5, 3)

VI) Focus −5, 3 ; directrix y = 7 y-axis

SOLUTION:
We have;

i) Directrix: y = 7 but 𝐲 = 𝐤 − 𝐚

ii) Focus (-5, 3) but Focus (h, k+a)

Above condition indicates that parabola is Equation of directrix;

along y-axis with vertex not at origin y =7
having;
x-axis
h = −5
k+a=3 i
k−a=7 ii
PREPARED BY:
Adding eqn (i) and eqn (ii), we get

2k = 10
Focus; S (-5, 3)
k=5

eqn (i) implies;

𝟓+a=3
a = −2

Now using;

Equation of directrix;
x+𝟓 2 = 4(−𝟐) y − 𝟓 y =7

x 2 + 10x + 25 = −8y + 40 x-axis

IV) Vertex 3, 2 and ends of focal chord are 5, 6 and 5, −2 .

y-axis
SOLUTION: P (x1 , y1 ) OR P (5, 6)

Let P (5, 6) and Q (5, -2) be the end points of focal

chord and V (3, 2) be the vertex of parabola as shown in
V (3, 2)
figure. A (5, 2)
It is clear from figure that the mid points of P
and Q represents focus of given parabola.

SOLUTION:
Let, the required equation of parabola with vertex V (0, 0)
and containing P (8, 1) be,

𝐲 𝟐 = 𝟒𝐚𝐱 𝐱 𝟐 = 𝟒𝐚𝐲
If P (8, 1) lie on the parabola it must satisfy its equation. If P (8, 1) lie on the parabola it must satisfy its equation.
