YOUR INITIAL TASK

Language, Language!

“Language may be a source of misunderstandings” by Marshall McLuhan, 1964

Analyze the quote above, then share what you think.

1. Does the user’s/audience’s own background or experience affect the interpretation of messages?
How?

Yes. The user’s or audience’s own background or experience may be considered as stock
knowledge where his or her impression about a particular piece of information or message was
derived or anchored on. Our schema greatly affects what we think or how we interpret a message. A
young person and old person may have different understanding of a thing because of the gap in
time.

2. Is it possible that a different individual derives a different meaning from the message? Explain.

Yes, it is possible. It is probably because he or she is coming from a different point of view
and/or different background. Everyone has a different interpretation of something depending on their
point of view. For instance, people who watch a similar TV show or visit a similar site frequently don't
have a similar encounter or left away with a similar impression or comprehension. People can decipher
a message diversely dependent on their age, sex, race, religion, capacity, culture, beneficial encounters,
values, convictions, perspectives, and so on. A person interprets new messages in the context of their
personal experience up until then, and in general people’s experience is different.

YOUR FINAL TASK

Essay

One way to create enthusiastic communication is through postcards. It is a card on which a

message may be sent by mail without an envelope and that often has a picture on one side. In just its
definition, we already knew that there are codes, conventions, and messages that are being obeyed and
conveyed to its receivers or audiences. Some common information codes in the Philippines that is
communicated enthuse postcards are the beautiful and spectacular sights in our country like tourist
spots. Conventions in Philippine postcards includes quotes and good sayings about the country. Among
all, I can conclude that our country is abundant with natural and beautiful places in most postcards. If I
were given the chance to create a postcard for a place or organization, I will use some picture as
symbolic code that will concretely show the culture of Filipinos and the symbolic code that I’ll put are
either the beautiful sights of our country or the Philippines’ flag. I’ll put the sophisticated graphics of our
country as technical codes. Through that code I can convey the important and good information about
the country, so that, the people around the world will be informed how amazing our country is. The
technical and symbolic codes contribute a lot to media and information literacy. It helps the information
to become more informative and these codes are very visible to an information. Code shows and gives
information and ideas about a place, organization, etc. by simply showing some symbolic pictures. A
media information needs to have codes, so through that, the people will easily recognize what’s the
information mostly about. Understanding the technical and symbolic codes enables us to connect with
people in one understanding. Avoiding and misunderstanding is key to effectively communicate with
others. It also in a way enriches the skills we are to develop in media and information literacy. It pertains
to the technical and symbolic ingredients or codes and conventions that media and information
professionals may select and use to communicate ideas, information and knowledge, are the physical
forms of a sign such as a sound, word or image that create a communication. I’ve realized that there are
many ways to convey good/bad information about something and that is through showing or putting
some symbolic codes. It makes an information clear and understandable.
