Direction: Read the passage below carefully and complete the statements below it using only the in
information given in the passage.

Giant leatherback sea turtles are endangered species. Their numbers have decreased extremely in recent
years. Leatherback turtles are among the largest existing reptiles. They get their name from their thick,
leathery skin that forms a flexible shell covered by small bones. A leatherback turtle can grow as large as
1.8 meters long. It can reach a weight of 320 or more kilos. These creatures primarily feed on jellyfish, and it
is because of this that the health and numbers of these sea animals are diminishing.

Sea turtles have eaten and survived on jellyfish for centuries. Why has this now become a problem?
Actually it’s not the jellyfish that cause any harm. It’s substances in the oceans of the modern world that
look like jellyfish that create the danger.

Because sea turtles are becoming rare, people become very worried whenever a dead sea-turtle is found on
the sea shore. Autopsies of dead leatherbacks have shown that a major cause of death for these animals is
the consumption of plastic bags such as sandwich bags, potato chip bags, trash bags, and the like. These
plastic items float in the water and look like jellyfish. The turtles then eat the bags thinking they are nice
meals. The bags cannot be digested however, and sooner or later these items block the turtle’s stomach
and cause death.

A great campaign has now started to alert sea travelers about the dangers of throwing plastic material in
to the water. Further research is planned to study the effects of these plastic bags on other marine animals
as well. It is suspected that sea turtles are not the only creatures who are eating plastic and then dying
from it.
