What are you being asked to do?

You will work as a team of 4 or 5 members (selected by your tutors) to develop an original Documentary.
You will plan each stage of production to create a final film that will be screened to your year group.
The final Documentary needs to be 10-15 minutes in length.

Task List
PLANNING STAGE - GUIDANCE

single folder that everyone contributes to. Your folder should contain:
Pre-production Folder

Presenter script Storyboards Audience Profile

Location Recces Risk Assessments Contact Details Lists

RESEARCH & REFLECTION STAGE - GUIDANCE

Using Weebly you must create an individual online reflective Production Journal that documents and
reflects on each stage of this project. This should be an ongoing process and should include all of the
following:

• Ideas Development
• Primary & Secondary Research into the following areas:
• Market Research –Existing documentaries. Platform & marketing considerations of Target
Audience
• Content Research – Your Documentary idea – Research into the subject of your documentary
• Production Research – Equipment: Camera, Audio, Workshops, Online Tutorials, Test Shoots,
Location Recces, contributors, presenters, voiceover
• Visual Evidence – use Photos, Screenshots, Video Links, Audio Clips to help document your
Production weebly
For the Research Stage it is useful to consider and explain WHAT, WHY, and HOW that research is useful.
(WHAT did you find out? WHY is it relevant? And HOW can it be useful for your Short Film?)
REFLECTION & EVALUATION
You should also be documenting your Reflective thoughts regularly and ensure you have updated your
Weebly after the following stages:

• Pre-production & Research stage

• Production stage (include Production photos)
• Post-Production stage (include screengrabs)
For the Reflection Stages, it is useful to consider and explain WHAT, WHY and HOW you did something.
(E.g WHAT did you do? WHY did you do it? HOW was it useful?)
Summarise the whole process in an Evaluation reflecting upon the following:
Were you happy with the final outcome of the Documentary, what was good? What could be improved
next time? (Use peer and Tutor feedback to guide you).
Evaluate your own performance and that of the group.
Upload your Weebly link to Assignments via TEAMS

PITCHING STAGE
As a group Pitch your Documentary idea to the class, fully explaining the following -

• What is your idea?

• How are you going to do it? What job roles have each of you taken on and why?
• How your Research has aided in the development of your idea.
• Why will anyone want to watch it? (Your unique angle)
• Who is your target audience?
• Define your purpose (intent)
• The different Styles of Documentaries - Critically explain and compare the different styles you
could use in your documentary and why you plan to use your chosen style.
• The typical Conventions you plan to use in your documentary.

A range of media can be used to present the idea, eg. Research interviews, photos, videos and Powerpoint
presentation etc. Note; you will also be assessed on your presentation and communication skills.

PRODUCTION STAGE
Working in a group you will plan, film and edit your own Documentary.
The Documentary must be between 10 – 15 minutes long.
Your film needs to clearly demonstrate the skills found in film production – camera, audio, performance,
direction & editing.
All films will be screened to the whole year group and you will be provided an opportunity to view and
critique your peer's work.
Films must be submitted onto the sharedrive in time for the screening day.
